Aug 27 2023 I experienced racial profiling at Asian Trends on ***** in **'sChinatown. Around 12:30 I walked in with my bf, one customer just walked out, doors were open, it was midday with tons of tourism, and the only employee in the store claimed to be closed. Their hours say **** on Sunday. We don't argue, we continued to wander around Chinatown. As we were walking passed the store a bit later we see plenty of people coming out. We decide to go in and look around, and the same employee (asian female) came up to me, leaving the people she was ringing up, to demand that I put things down. There were also children right next to me picking up items. I asked her if they were closed earlier, and she said they were closed for lunch - again, the doors were wide open, someone had just walked out, and they're only open four hours on Sunday. I called her bluff, but fine. She continued to ask if I need help, I told her no and ask why she wasn't ringing up the customers that immediately needed her service. She made sly comments about everyone being a customer in her store, and I reminded her that that's why she needs to help those who immediately needed help, especially since there were no other employees inside. She then told me she didn't want me buying 'her' stuff, and continued to try and go back and forth. It felt that she was looking for an argument, trying to antagonize the one Black person in the store so she had an excuse to weaponize her East Asian identity and get me to act in a way that would let her press charges. Who knows what her intent was, I'm only 21, she had to be mid 30s, and was incredibly ***** and hostile. After we walked out she followed us out and continued making comments, asking if I "wanted to speak to them." I didn't know who "they" were, but I asked her why she was still talking. On ****** Reviews there are other comments related to rudeness and offensive behavior, one review even mentioned the f-slur being used by employees towards customers.
