Scam information

This content is based on victim and potential victim accounts. Government agencies and legitimate business names and phone numbers are often used by scam artists to take advantage of people.

Description

I received a voicemail from the 412-226-6640 phone number. The voicemail stated that I had equipment to return to Verizon and needed to do so to avoid a late fee charge. The Voicemail left a separate toll-free number to call Verizon to discuss return methods. Just recently, I actually did cancel Verizon services. When I called the toll free number listed in the voicemail, the line also listed the accurate address for which I just canceled services. Nonetheless, I called the 412 number back to investigate. Someone answered, and took my name and phone number. They did not request any additional information. The person I spoke with told me that I could return equipment within 30 days to any Verizon store that accepts equipment, and I should have my account number ready to return the equipment. Again, they did not ask for a Social Security number or other information. However, when I asked for a reference ID for the call, they would not give one which I found suspicious. I then called Verizon’s main service number to discuss the incident and even they agree that it is a bit suspicious. I believe this could be a scam caller leaving voicemails about equipment return, and including an actual toll-free number by Verizon in the voicemail to appear credible. I believe the purpose of the scam is to confirm active cell phone numbers for future targets.
