In an attempt to call Costco Warranty, I dialed 1-800-861-0450 instead of the correct Costco phone number 1-866-0450. Thinking I was speaking to a Costco representative, they asked for verification information such as my name and address. The person then asked for my banking information to verify my identity. After several minutes of telling them this did not seem right and I have never been asked for banking information to verify my identity and that a membership number should suffice, they told me I could call 1-800-555-1212 to continue the verification process. I did not provide banking information but instead went to a Costco store then realizing I dialed 1-800 instead of 1-866. This honest mistake could easily happen to anyone so I thought it would be best to report this.
