An account on TikTok messaged me claiming they ere an artist and would like to make a 50cmx50cm mural of me, and pay me $300 for it. They said they chose me because my profile looked good. They said the reason they were paying me was to help promote their art online and because "no vendors will accept a painting without a payment reference due to copyright law." I agreed to have the mural made of me on TikTok. The artist told me they were going to connect me with their "client," who would be the one who would handle payment. I sent them my number and the "client" reached out to me first. I was already slightly suspicious as to why they would be paying me for this, but I became very suspicious when their client insisted on paying me with an electronic check. I asked to pay with a more secure platform like PayPal Business, and they declined, saying "no sorry only mobile deposit check." When I became suspicious, I messaged the artist on TikTok saying I am fine with not being paid and the mural is cool enough on its own without payment. The artist responded "no vendors will accept a painting without a payment reference due to copyright law in other not face the court order, fines, or escalated legal action so you'll have to get paid for the picture. That's why the muse has to be paid for the photo and am I getting my point across." I then told the "client" not to worry about paying me and they sent the exact same message, word for word.
