Date of Transaction: 10-11 August 2021 Amount of money paid to the business: $3950 What business committed to provide: Move all our household possessions in good repair from ***** **** ******* * ***** ** **** ******* ***** ***** ************ ** ***** ***** ** ***** The nature of the dispute: ******* ********** shoes, which were present at the former address, did not show up at the current residence. The business claimed to have looked into the issue, and is unable to account for the missing shoes.
Moving day came and went and it wasn’t until a couple of weeks
later, while unpacking and desperate to find shoes for work, that I realized that
all my shoes, except those I wore on moving day, were missing. Every single
one! At first, the thought of moving company theft did not cross my mind. However,
as I frantically tore through box after container, I wondered “What could have
happened?” I reflected on the second moving van, - from the same company but unrelated
to our move - that parked outside our soon to be former residence, and the
unknown, unannounced, and uninvited men who freely walked through the apartment
as we were being moved out. Also, having packed our belongings, the movers
overnighted with the truck somewhere beyond our presence before delivery to our
new house the next day. Yet further, while unpacking the delivery, neither my
wife nor I laid eyes on any of those shoes. Not one even once! These
experiences made it clear that something wasn’t right. After a thorough search
of the house, I finally realized that we had experienced moving company
theft.
I immediately got on a call with someone whom I
believe to be the owner, or one of them at least. He blatantly and condescendingly
denied that the theft had occurred while doing all he could to insult me in the
process. The owner was rude beyond belief! Notwithstanding the fact that my
wife and I live alone, he suggested that maybe some other mysterious and
nondescript person stole my shoes. He even made the ridiculous suggestion that,
not liking any of my shoes, my wife threw all of them out unbeknownst to me and
has kept that a secret since then. He then promptly hung up on me. I now await
the research into the matter and call-back that he said would be forthcoming.
Neither has my phone-call to his secretary been able to produce this result, so
far. This behavior is most unbecoming of a business owner, to say the least.
Initially, moving was a hectic but exciting
event for both my wife and I. We did not imagine having to protect ourselves
from company theft to enjoy the journey, despite the anxiety and exertion. We now
reevaluate the cost of the move, considering the loss we have so far incurred.
It is hurtful that in addition to tipping the movers generously, and purchasing
food, drink and even medication – from water and coffee to muffins, fried
chicken with macaroni and cheese, and Advil – we would be treated this way by
the company. The fact that the seemingly nice person whom we believe to be the other
owner, offered us a complimentary but paltry meal at a third-rate eatery, does
not in any way diminish the hurt we feel. I have still to face the expense and
effort of securing shoes for work and life. I await the results of my complaints
to the Better Business Bureau and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
