BBB Serving Southeast TN & Northwest GA 2025 Student of Integrity Scholarship Recipients

Student of Integrity Scholarship Information

This marks the 20th anniversary of BBB’s launch of the Student of Integrity Scholarships program. BBB is so pleased to have built on the success of this program during those 20 years. The 1st year, 6 scholarships were awarded, and from there the program has steadily grown to awarding at least 10 annual scholarships.

We cherish our partnerships with our schools as well. Students entered the competition representing most of the 96 High Schools in the  21 counties our BBB serves in SE TN and NW GA.

To be considered for the Student of Integrity Scholarships, each student is asked to provide an essay on the importance of ethics in business and our community. This is a critical piece of their entry – comprising half of their score. The judges also review each student’s involvement in community service, leadership opportunities, as well as academics.

BBB is extremely thankful for all the time and thought that the panel of judges provided during their review of the entries.

The awards this year represent $191,000 in scholarships that have been awarded so far to worthy students in our communities -- and we couldn’t do it without our sponsors. We want to recognize those business sponsors who make the awarding of scholarships possible. They are:

For my grandfather, honesty is woven into the very fabric of his business. While industry norms dance around the makeup of seed mixes, he proudly touts percentages of unidentified ingredients. While his admission may seem unappealing, his unyielding transparency is a testament to his commitment to an age-old value: honesty. If a business is honest about the supposedly miniscule details, they won’t hold back any major information.

Why do these specific businesses and their unconventional policies matter? Because ethics are not just buzzwords; they are the linchpin that allows businesses to thrive. When customers can trust a business to reveal its imperfections, they're able to forge lasting connections. In a world bombarded by half-truths, ethical practices become a competitive advantage.

Ethics form the bedrock of trust in business transactions and interactions within communities. Trust is the cornerstone of any successful business relationship, whether it involves customers, employees, suppliers, or stakeholders. When businesses adhere to ethical principles such as honesty, fairness, and transparency, they cultivate trust among stakeholders, leading to long-term relationships and loyalty. In turn, this fosters a conducive environment for business growth, innovation, and collaboration, ultimately driving economic prosperity.

Moreover, ethical behavior fosters cohesion, social responsibility, and a sense of belonging among members of the community. Ultimately, embracing ethics in both business and community settings not only enhances individual and organizational reputation but also promotes a more equitable society.

Businesses have a vested interest in maintaining the highest levels of honesty, character, and integrity. Consistently honest business practices and dealing fairly with customers builds their brand and their reputation, which is the backbone of business.

The importance of ethics in our corner of the world simply can’t be overstated. I’m proud to live in a community where values like loyalty, honor, integrity, and a good reputation still seem to matter. Ethical business owners who play “by the rules” not only make a long term profit, but also earn the respect of their customers and the community at large. And I’d imagine they have a clearer conscience and sleep better at night as well.

In our community and in business, character and ethics are foundational to building trust and credibility. They shape an individual’s reputation and, by extension, the identity of any enterprise they are associated with. Ethical conduct promotes fair practices and rewards a culture of responsibility and integrity.  As local businesses operate, these valuable principles guard against corruption and encourage sustainability, adding value to both the economy and the community.

Service and engagement in community initiatives further extend the importance of character and ethics. Community engagement is not simply about lending a hand; it’s about doing so with compassion, respect, and selfless dedication to the greater good. Leadership in service projects, like those in the Future Farmers of America, leverage high ethical standards that inspire others and promote positive outcomes for all!

Ethics is the foundation of business and community interactions, crucial in promoting trust, integrity, and sustainability. In today's interconnected world, ethical behavior is of utmost importance, as it affects the success of businesses and shapes the fabric of our communities.

As a participant in the Future Farmers of America program, I have had the opportunity to witness firsthand the significance of ethics in both business and community endeavors. As I strive to build a successful business, I realize that ethical conduct is not just a matter of compliance with regulations, but a fundamental commitment to doing what is right for my business, myself, and community.

Ethics is the cornerstone of business and community interactions, shaping how we conduct ourselves and impact the world.

In today’s fast-paced and interconnected world, ethical behavior is not just a moral imperative but also a necessity for long-term success. Ethical conduct serves as the foundation for trust and credibility. Whether it involves ensuring fair treatment of employees, maintaining transparency in transactions, or prioritizing sustainability, ethical business practices benefit individual businesses and contribute to a more equitable and harmonious society. Additionally, prioritizing ethics creates a space where employees fell valued and respected, which leads to higher levels of productivity and engagement.

Moreover, ethics in business extend beyond mere compliance with laws and regulations. It is about going above and beyond to do what is right, even when no one is watching. Nurturing a culture of integrity and accountability that permeates every level of an organization is essential.

Ethics are the very foundation in the building blocks of a community and the businesses in it. Without a solid foundation, anything built upon it can crumble. Serving as a guide, they are moral principles that help govern a behavior. The way a business conducts itself creates a picture of what it represents.

Behaving in a consistent, ethical manner then leads to a rock-solid reputation. Ethics help ensure everyone follows the rules and does the right thing. That promotes integrity and trust, which is key for their success in any community. Choices a business and community make are directly responsible for shaping relationships with customers and citizens. They ensure long term success or failure.

2024 Student Lena Nguyen
Lena Nguyen of Notre Dame High School. Lena has a 4.33 GPA, is the President of Spanish Honors Society, Constitution Bowl Co-Captain, Presidential Service Award Recipient, and served on the Chattanooga Public Library - Teen Advisory Board Member

Ethics is important in business and our community. What I learned from my mother are the values of honesty, respect, and responsibility. A business should remain honest with customers and provide them with quality products and services. This means that businesses should meet the standards, but in my opinion, they should go beyond them to connect more with customers’ demands. Going beyond the standard creates a uniqueness in a business’s product.

Bringing ethics into the business world contributes to the local community. They create positive job opportunities, grow the economy, and support local and qualitative products and services. Business owners can be creative and/or prioritize environmental sustainability. An ethically run business builds relationships among the workers and customers. It makes the experience feel less like a transaction and more like a personal visit.

Ethics. Morals. Compromise and dissension and the delicate balance in between. To Merriam-Webster, ethics are the “moral principles that govern a person’s behavior or the conducting of an activity,” but to society, they are the foundations on which we foster purposeful business and social responsibility.

The most crucial part of business is developing a company mission. By laying out clear intent and action for your business, employers, employees, and consumers can discern a company’s passion and purpose. According to Zeno Group, 94% of customers want to engage with businesses with explicit purposes, like fighting racial injustice. From the same survey 83% believe companies should earn a profit only if they positively impact society.

2024 Student Sarah Pritchard
Sarah Pritchand of Cleveland High School. Sarah has a 4.00 GPA, Ranked 1st in her Class, and Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award Recipient

Warren Buffet said it best when he said, “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.” As the daughter of a small business owner, I have seen firsthand the importance of relationships between business owners and their customers. In the world of business, it is extremely important to treat all customers with respect and equity. In addition, the majority of people in a community wish to feel valued and appreciated when making decisions. Thus, to successfully sustain a business or build a community, it is important to implement a sense of ethics, create a credible reputation, build trust, and establish responsibility.

Trust is one of the most important aspects of managing an ethical business because it allows for increasing customer loyalty, decreased employee turnover, and higher revenue and profitability. This contributes to the importance of ethics in a community as well because when a community trusts a small business, it will support that business wholeheartedly.
