I was able to find a copy of your estimate from August of 2005 and it clearly states that felt paper was to be installed across the entire roof deck. We currently offer as a standard, ice & water shield 3' up from the roof edge, in all valleys and around chimneys and other penetrations. However, in 2005 our estimates included felt paper across the entire roof deck with ice & water shield at the bottom edge as a recommendation for an additional cost. Your contract and your invoice confirm that you did not elect to include that option. As far as the shingle deterioration goes, I was hoping to provide you with some avenue of recourse in the way of a manufacturer's warranty claim. Unfortunately, your shingle manufacturer (*******) was purchased by ************************* in April of 2007 whereupon *** dissolved the company and has refused to honour their product warranties. Your roof has failed prematurely not due to poor workmanship but due to shingle failure. Shingle manufacturer's no longer label their shingles as 20 year, 30 year etc. as most manufacturer's warranties have increased to a limited lifetime. None of these manufacturer's expect their products to last a lifetime, which is why their warranties include a clause called "pro-rated" whereby the warranty coverage degrades over time. Most claims were eroded to little or nothing after a significant amount of time had passed. All this would have been detailed in your product documentation.
While we sympathize with your situation, it is not fair nor appropriate to accuse our hard working professionals of poor workmanship when you clearly did not follow our recommendation for ice & water shield at the edge and when your installation lasted well beyond our workmanship guarantee.
