VERY disappointed with Stallion Van Lines! We hired them to move our possessions from Alberta to B.C. We were told that if we moved no later in the week than Tuesday, they could definitely meet us at our new house in B.C. on Friday. We also told them we needed to drive to Jasper (from the Edmonton area) on moving day, and asked what time they thought they would be finished loading the moving van. We were assured it would be loaded by 6:00 p.m. at the latest. Having heard a nightmare moving story from my husband's brother, we also made sure to ask if Stallion/Atlas subcontracted out, and were told, "We do not!" The estimator was confident, reassuring, and we felt like we could trust him. So far so good! Then came moving day. The movers showed up on time, rolled out their mats to protect our floors, and started to pack up our boxes. They worked hard and were fast, and I was surprised at how many boxes each guy could carry. . . but not impressed when I saw them hefting boxes clearly marked as being "Heavy" and "Fragile" without assistance. Some of the boxes were quite large and cumbersome, and yet instead of two of them working together to make sure the box was lifted properly and handled with care, one guy would just hoist it up however he could to carry it. It soon became clear that they were not paying the slightest bit of attention to "FRAGILE" labels, nor were they careful with furniture. We had been told it would be safe to leave items in drawers, but let me tell you, it is NOT SAFE. Our dressers were tipped sideways and upside-down, without any regard for the contents. One of my steamer trunks, which has sturdy handles on each side for two men to carry it easily, was tipped sideways onto a dolly and then leaned fully upside-down as it was wheeled away. When I was packing, I had not realized this would happen!! And guess what? Stallion is not liable for ANY damage to your belongings if you have not also hired them to personally pack all of your stuff into boxes. If you packed it, it's apparently your fault if things get broken, no matter how rough they are with the boxes. They also expect you to feed them lunch, even though this isn't in the contract and wasn't mentioned verbally, either. My husband, who is a friendly guy, chatted a bit with the movers. He asked them how long they had been working for Stallion, and were told, "Oh, I don't work for them. I own my own truck and they hire me." Well guess what, Mr. Estimator Guy, that is EXACTLY how subcontracting works!! Liar! Halfway through the afternoon, I left with my kids, to take them to say their goodbyes to their friends. My husband told me that as soon as I left, the movers decided to take a break. They just stood around inside the moving van for a good hour, until my husband became concerned about the advancing hour of the day and lack of progress, and started bringing boxes out to them. When I returned home at about 7:00 p.m., the movers were STILL loading up our possessions. In fact, they did not finish until 9:00. The floors were filthy, despite the mats. When they were finished, the guy in charge came inside to have us sign all the pages of the contract, and he immediately told us that our stuff would be delivered the following Monday. Um, excuse me? We had made ALL of our travelling plans to revolve around Friday delivery. We had been told Friday would work. But now that our possessions were basically hostage, we wouldn't get them until Monday. Obviously we had no choice but to agree and sign. We bought a quick supper at ********** and then began the three hour drive to Jasper, at 10:00 p.m. We were exhausted when we started, and had to literally shake our heads back and forth at times during the drive, just to stay awake. We also got to arrive to an empty house on Friday, and spend the whole weekend sitting on the floor and eating off of paper plates with disposable cutlery. If Stallion had simply been honest and up-front with us, and told us the truth instead of what they thought we wanted to hear, this could have been avoided. We would have spent the first night in a local hotel, been able to drive SAFELY to Jasper and enjoy the amazing scenery in the daylight, maybe spend an extra day there, and spend the weekend in hotels, sleeping in real beds. I should add that we paid $10,000 for this "service." Most of our stuff did arrive intact, which I think is thanks to how well I packed, considering that they were even more careless with our boxes and furniture when they unloaded. Boxes were even left in the wrong rooms all over the house, despite being clearly labelled. We will NEVER use movers again. The Stallion estimator had told us that bad moving companies gave them all a bad name, but you seem plenty capable of doing that yourself, Mister.
