Greetings, I read the complaints and reviews about Schagrin after being subject to aggressive and intimidating behavior by them. I was dismayed and shocked by the legal position they would potentially assume if their decision was contested. I had been a customer for close to 40yrs. Yes, they will come and place a tank and all the incidentals but they don't tell you the exorbitant cost you'll be subject to, for propane, above other suppliers, as the years go by, and if you want to terminate service it could cost well over a thousand dollars. You can be misguided by their representatives and when they are questioned about the inaccurate and sometimes illegal advice/guidance that may or may not have been acted upon, you'll be asked if you got that in writing exonerating themselves in the process. They were not forthright or completely honest with me and then became intimidating. I'm relieved to be released from dealing with Schagrin.SchagrinGAS Company Response

Schagrin Gas appreciates the 35 years you have been a customer of ours and we respect your request to terminate your business relationship with us. With all our customers, Schagrin gas strives for transparency in our policies and procedures, our terms and conditions as stated in our signed gas service agreement, such as the one you signed, and informing customers of the Delaware Liquified Petroleum Gas Container Law (Title 16) and the rules pertaining to gas service agreements (Title 6) of the Delaware Code. You entered into an agreement with us with your signature, acknowledging, understanding and agreeing to abide by the terms of it. To protect our interests, and for the safety of yourself, your neighbors, and anyone within a specified radius of where that tank was installed by us, no one except the owner of the tank may fill, refill, move or remove that pressurized vessel. Our terms are in place to protect the homeowner from any liability and protect our property from being tampered with without our expressed, written consent. When your account was terminated per your request, we were informed that you violated both your signed gas service agreement, and the Delaware container law regarding pressurized vessels. We have documented you had partially dug out our tank when you first contacted us on August 2, 2022. We advised you on that same day to not continue with any additional digging. The legal position we were in was ignored and you continued to dig up and remove our tank from where it was installed and contacted us on August 26th indicating our tank was in your driveway waiting for us to pick it up. Your admittance to digging up and removing the tank from its location on the property is illegal per Delaware Code and is a breach of your Gas Service agreement contract with Schagrin. You also did not contact Miss Utility for line marking which is also a requirement before any digging to protect yourself and your regional utility companies, including us. Contacting Miss Utility helps prevent the chance of a line break/breach and is for your own safety. Since you have been a long-standing customer of ours, we opted to not pursue further action against you and only charge our standard pickup tank fee for a tank of that size. This fee is a set amount based on the size of the tank to help offset the labor and equipment charges to pick it up. It is a different fee than if we would have removed the tank ourselves. Since you removed it, it is subject to inspection for damages beyond normal wear and tear, before it is reconditioned. The credit on the account was refunded to you in the form of a check and mailed to your address. Our internal investigation revealed no instances of misguiding the customer or giving advice that would be illegal. Any special arrangements which contradict our gas service agreement should be documented and signed off by both parties prior to any action. We do not intimidate our customers and we do encourage our customers to know their rights and responsibilities as stated in their signed gas service agreement and in compliance with Delaware law.Review from Kevin B

It’s time to go period!!! This company is a complete ripoff. Their prices for propane are 3.79 a gallon when everyone else is 2.50 and lower. They claim it’s because their propane is different, I call bull crap considering my neighbor works on a oil rig and does this business for a living and says their straight up lying. I’ve been with them for 9 years and they claim I have to pay for removal of equipment but won’t give me a price and I have the original contract which states nothing. Please stay away from this company, because they don’t care about their customers once so ever just about price gouging people. I’m sure their reply to this will be something stupid and nothing on why their price for prone is a 1.50 more.SchagrinGAS Company Response

Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate the opportunity to explain when customers want to ensure that their pricing is fair and gives them the value for what they are paying. Our pricing is based on your annual usage. Customers that use more may be eligible for a better pricing tier based on their usage. We also use the U.S. Energy Information Administration website which provides independent statistics and analysis to ensure we are not price gouging our customers. As of the date of your complaint, the average price per gallon in your state is $3.576 per gallon and that price has gone up in the last week since. Your account is eligible for our prompt pay discount which if you take advantage of will actually be below the state average price per gallon then and now. Some companies may be offering pricing that you have cited as a first fill rate or a limited time promotion similar to what we offer our new customers. They also may offer that pricing as a one time current delivery price if the customer owns their tank since their is no liability or obligation for that company to provide propane to you in the future. Your agreement with us includes a guarantee of propane year round, emergency 24/7 deliveries if necessary, no hidden fees, and if needed we offer a level payment plan (budget) which some companies do not offer. In addition to our promotions for our new customers, we also can offer special offers to our customers that are loyal to us for more than ten years. Also, as stated in your signed gas service agreement, all removal costs are assessed to the account holder upon termination. This pricing can range and does not have a set specific amount because tank location, tank size, difficulty of removal, and the speed at which you would like your tank removed, can result in different prices. We make no claim that our propane is different than others resulting in a higher price. In the 89 years we have been serving the community as a family owned business for four generations, I assure you we are customer focused and do care about our customers and strive to provide our customers safety, reliability, and as much flexibility in our business relationship with them. We hope you will continue your business relationship with us now and in the future as a loyal customer of ours. Thank you for allowing us to serve you.
