Neace Tire mounted a tire on a rim too rusted to hold air rather than warn me beforehand, then wanted $20 more to switch it to another rim. I bought a tire there in August for a 1987 van. Six weeks later, I first noticed it was low 15 psi. I promptly called Neace and was told that though slightly past the 30 day warranty, they would check it out. I went to Neace Oct. 15 with my receipt. I was met by a liar who brazenly admitted the problem was one Neace could have avoided, but was just as determined to make a bad situation worse. Suffering from a bad case of diarrhea of the mouth, he made a big issue of the fact that it was slightly past 30 days and that the rim was old and rusty. Mouth in gear, mind in neutral, he talked over me nonsensically. When I asked why, if he was so convinced the rim was unusable, he didn’t tell me before charging me $45 to put a tire on it, he claimed Neace did tell me that. He is a liar. Had they, I had another working rim in the van they could have used. When it dawned on him he was pointing the finger at himself, he spun the alternate theory that it was my fault for not assuming that any rim that age would leak, saying it was older than he was. The problem with that is, the van has four other wheels the same age that seal perfectly, as do four rims from a 1982 classic Oldsmobile. Not only is he under 35—from all appearances, so is his IQ. If a rusty rim was the issue, that problem did not arise between the 30th and 60th day. The right thing to do would have been to switch the tire to my good spare rim at no charge, since it was their fault. And if they had no intention of acting in good faith no matter what, they should have told me on the phone to spare me a wasted trip. No decent, self-respecting tire dealer proceeds to mount a tire on a rim they know is bad, then tells the customer two months later it is bad, then lies about having told them earlier, then goes out of their way to shun a reasonable and available resolution.

Update to my first review: High school kids come to the rescue of Neace Tire, where airheads as well as tires spring leaks. It was a bad valve stem causing that steady leak and not an old rim--contrary to what the liar at Neace said. While they were doing other work on my car, I asked a high school auto class too evaluate the leak. They had no difficulty determining it was the valve stem. I had always suspected as much based on the consistency of the air loss and tight seals on rims older than that. Also, Neace has installed bad valve stems before. Anybody but Neace could conclude this stem didn't go bad two weeks out of warranty--it was bad when they put it in. Neace obviously has less than a high school education when it comes to tires, wheels, valve stems and causes of leaks. This might be a good time for a career change. The moral of the story is certain: Stay in school.
