In early February of 2022, my check engine light went on in my 2017 ******* Accent. I brought it over to the ******* dealer in ****** ******** -*****************. -************. The $175 diagnosis showed that I needed a new catalytic converter which would set me back $2300. I decided to have it towed to Highland Park Auto Clinic, where the individual - ******************* installed an aftermarket one for $1500. Everything was fine until October of 2022 - only 8 months after he installed it. The check engine light came back on with diagnostic codes showing catalytic converter failure. ************** convinced me it was not the catalytic converter, but the O2 sensor. So I had the O2 sensor installed for $250. However, the check engine light came back on the next day. When I brought it back to him, he claimed that the computer needed to be reset. I then drove from ****** to Highland Park where he reset the computer, only for the check engine light to come back on the next day. I brought it back over, and *** still denied that the Catalytic converter was in fact the issue. He claimed that the codes pointed to the AUXILIARY catalytic converter malfunction. Ok -so I guess there are two catalytic converters.- Who knew? I, being gullible, dished out another $500. 3 days went by and I thought the issue was finally resolved, however the check engine light came back on! *** once again claimed that it was the CO2 sensor, even though he replaced it less than a month ago. 3 days go by and check engine light came on once again! I went to Waukegan Tire where the diagnostic codes showed it was in fact the catalytic converter -what a surprise! At this point, I was extremely upset. Not only am I out a total of $2250 - plus towing,I had also wasted quite a bit of time, traveled 40 miles back and forth between ****** and Highland Park, and missed multiple days of work . But I held it together long enough to confront *** again. This time, he finally agreed that it was in fact an issue with the catalytic converter which was causing the check engine light to go on. He finally agreed to uphold the warranty and replace it. So I was relieved and thought 'finally it will be taken care of'. He didn't reimburse me for the CO2 sensor or the auxiliary catalytic converter however, claiming I needed them regardless. I figured getting him to replace the CC was challenging enough, so I let that part go. Before I left his claustrophobic establishment, he told me it will take time to procure one due to recent catalytic converter thefts. The thefts are true but the fact is, there is no shortage of them. I let two weeks go by before contacting him because I didn't want to be - 'that guy'. When I finally did contact him, I received a very brief response, Wait until I have it in my hands. Even though I was extremely angry at this point, I let 2 more weeks go by. This time, the response was, I'm sick and out of the office. I let yet another week go by and called him once again, only to have him hang up on me and then not answer my calls, emails, or texts. Since this incident, I have made several attempts to contact him and have this resolved. As of now- March 28th 2023 I am still driving around with my check engine light on and a faulty catalytic converter. I filed a complaint with the Cook County ******** Attorney General of Fraud and Protection- to no avail. I have also been doing quite a bit of research. I discovered that ******** EPA guidelines require all catalytic converters, aftermarket or new, to have an 8 yr./80,000 mile warranty on them. I, unfortunately, don't have a written receipt for the said catalytic converter. Even though I asked *** several times for him to send me one via text like he does with all of his receipts.I do, however, have my credit card statement that lists a $1500 transaction to Highland Park Auto Clinic when it was installed. I also have numerous text messages between *** and myself in reference to this situation. To this day, despite my many attempts, he still has not contacted me.
