Looking for the hottest toys, celebrity merch or beauty deals? Many online retailers offer big savings during July sales promotions, but the Better Business Bureau reminds consumers to be careful of scams and counterfeit goods, especially fake versions of popular items.
Recently, BBB has received Scam Tracker(SM) reports from consumers about alleged counterfeit goods pretending to be highly in-demand products, such as Labubu collectible toys, Kulfi lip stain, and merchandise related to Kendrick Lamar’s tour.
“July is a big time for online sales, and many of these counterfeit products are being sold via social media ads,” says Claire Rosenzweig, president and CEO of BBB Serving Metro New York. “Thanks to AI, the ads can look very real and even fake celebrity endorsements can be convincing. Consumers need to be wary when considering purchases from unfamiliar online sources and pay careful attention to where they are sharing their credit card and personal information.”
