Taming the great outdoors: Behind the Business with DR Power Equipment of South Burlington, VT

(DR Power Equipment)

Taming the great outdoors

DR Power Equipment’s roots trace back to 1985 when their story began in a Vermont log cabin. What started as "Dick Raymond's Country Home Products," DR Power Equipment’s origins are steeped in Vermont's heritage. The founding fathers, including industry stalwarts like Lyman Wood, Rich Alther, Dick Raymond, John Gibbons, and Bill Lockwood, pooled their expertise and passion to introduce their inaugural product: The Dick Raymond Work/Rest Wagon.

Today, DR Power Equipment, a division of Generac Power Systems since 2016, offers equipment to tame your outdoor space, whether it be your backyard or your back 40 acres and beyond. They have a range of gas—and battery-powered products, from lawn mowers to leaf vacuums to wood chippers, which are sold internationally through a number of different channels, including direct to customers, power equipment dealers, and retailers.

Matt Bieber, President, explained DR Power Equipment is driven by a singular mission “to craft tools of unparalleled quality and performance, empowering individuals to make the most of every moment spent outdoors.”

“Our philosophy is to find ways to solve problems,” Bieber said. “Everything we develop is purpose built. We are all users of the equipment, so we understand how things work and how they are used.”

DR Power Equipment prides itself on creating new and innovative products and ways to deliver them. Its team of engineers, designers, and outdoor enthusiasts works to anticipate the evolving needs of its customers and deliver solutions to enhance their outdoor pursuits. Bieber explained that this, coupled with its customer service, is what truly sets it apart.

“Our commitment to excellence extends far beyond the point of sale,” Bieber said. “Our call center has experienced technicians ready to provide aftermarket support, and we have a user-friendly website offering access to parts and accessories. We ensure our customers have the support they need to get up and running.”

Being a successful company doesn’t come without its challenges. The supply chain issues that came as a result of the COVID pandemic were very real for DR Power Equipment. Bieber explained that shoring up suppliers and buying domestically has been a big initiative.

DR Power Equipment is also committed to supporting its community. Bieber said they sponsor local Little League teams, donate equipment and paid time-off for volunteer projects, and provide community outreach to fire departments, organizations like ECHO, Leahy Center for Lake Champlain, and the Howard Center.

“I’m not a native of Vermont, but have been here for 13 years and love it,” Bieber said. “The downtown area is quite cosmopolitan and the people are so easy to connect with.”

DR Power Equipment has been a BBB Accredited Member since 2011.
