BBB Tip: What to know before renting a tool or construction equipment

Planning a DIY project? Renting the tools you need can cut the cost, especially if it’s equipment that you only plan to use once. Renting also means you don’t need to worry about storing or maintaining the equipment after the project.
What should you know before renting a tool or piece of equipment? BBB recommends the following tips.
How to rent tools and equipment
- Make sure renting will save you money. If you plan on using a tool frequently, the cost of purchasing the item is likely less in the long run than renting it over and over. Family Handyman recommends calculating whether renting will save you money by adding up the rental price, along with gas and transportation, and comparing the total with the price of buying the tool, plus gas and maintenance. Of course, other factors could sway your decision, too, like whether you have a place to store the equipment when it isn’t in use.
- Understand the cost of the rental. Tool rental is usually charged by hour, day, or week, so calculate how much time you’ll need to complete your project. Next, factor in how long it will take you to drive to and from your project and how long it will take you to set up the equipment and get familiar with its controls. These things can consume valuable rental time if you don’t factor them in. Remember, too, that you’ll need to purchase fuel for the tool if it’s gas-powered.
- Ask about trailers for large equipment. Depending on the size of the equipment, you may need a trailer to transport it. You may need to rent the trailer and the tool if you don't have one. Usually, the cost of the rental does not include the trailer.
- Inquire about special deals on rentals. Some stores offer special prices if you rent a tool later in the day, so be sure to ask.
- Make sure you rent the right kind and size equipment. Before you rent a tool or a piece of machinery, ensure your project's scope is well-defined. Identify any special requirements your project demands and know precisely how long you’ll need the rental to last. Keep in mind that equipment size is essential, too. An underpowered machine won’t get your job done, while an overpowered machine could be challenging to operate and even cause damage to your work area.
- Get instructions on how to use the tool before you leave the store. Before you head home with your rented tool, allow the rental center staff to show you how to use it. Try it out for yourself before you head home. This will save you valuable time and help you avoid making mistakes while the tool is in your possession.
- Do the prep work ahead of time. Ensure you can use the tool or machine when you get home. Don’t waste your rental time with tasks you could complete ahead of time, such as taking measurements or clearing a work area.
- Be careful with the equipment. If you break a costly piece of equipment while renting it, you will likely have to pay for repairs or purchase it. Ensure you understand the tool's work, and use care while handling it.
- Keep an eye on the time. Be sure you understand exactly when the tool needs to be back in the store and return it on time to avoid late fees.
- Ask about delivery services. Delivery services will cost you extra, but when the store delivers and picks up the equipment, you will have more time to use it. It’s possible this option could save you money in the long run, especially if you don’t have a vehicle or trailer that can transport the item.
