BBB Tip: Checking out a doctor or dentist

Before visiting a doctor or dentist, it is important to do some research first. Ask friends and family, or your current physician, for recommendations. Some area hospitals also offer referral services. Additionally, insurance companies, health maintenance organizations, and managed care plans usually have a panel of physicians from which to select.
Before scheduling an appointment with a new doctor, check their disciplinary record and make sure they are properly licensed. You can obtain this information from your state's Department of Education (for license information) or the Department of Health (for disciplinary information).
Your rights as a patient
- Access to medical records. You have the right to obtain copies of your medical or dental records.
- Informed consent. Doctors must explain treatments, risks, and alternatives before proceeding.
- Right to a second opinion. You can seek another provider's opinion before making healthcare decisions.
- Privacy and confidentiality. Your medical information is protected under HIPAA in the U.S. and PIPEDA in Canada.
Tips for finding a doctor or dentist
- Check credentials & licensing: Verify that the doctor or dentist is licensed and in good standing with your state’s medical or dental board.
- Read reviews & BBB Business Profiles: Look for BBB Accredited practices and read customer reviews on BBB.org and other trusted sources.
- Get referrals: Ask family, friends, or your primary care physician for recommendations. Also note that some medical offices require a referral from your primary care physician.
- Confirm insurance coverage: Ensure the provider accepts your health or dental insurance to avoid unexpected costs.
- Consider specialties & experience: If you need specialized care (e.g., orthodontist, cardiologist), check their qualifications in that area.
- Visit the office: Check cleanliness, staff professionalism, and how well they communicate with patients.
- Understand fees & policies: Ask about consultation fees, billing policies, and payment plans upfront.
How to file a complaint against a doctor or dentist
- Contact the provider’s office: Address your concerns directly with the doctor or office manager first.
- File a complaint with the BBB: Submit a complaint at BBB.org if there are issues with billing, service, or professionalism.
- Report to medical or dental boards: If you believe a doctor or dentist acted unethically or provided substandard care, report them to your state’s medical board or dental association.
- Notify your insurance company: If your complaint involves insurance billing fraud, report it to your insurer.
- Consider legal action: For severe cases of malpractice, consult an attorney about your options.
