Merrie *** Cullin came into my home with my contractor to look over where I wanted to build an addition. She was to draw up the plans. She asked to take my original house plans with her with the intent to return them. My contractor ended up doing work for her and they had a falling out . I called her to ask for my plans to be returned and she said she would mail them out. After approx. 1 1/2 to 2 years of waiting to receive them back she now says she cant find them .

The contractor, was doing work for me. At the same time, he asked me to design the customers addition. During the process, I gave the contractor  the customers preliminary final drawings for review and then he quit working at my house because he would not follow my plans and specifications and failed to correct his mistakes. I never heard back from him.
The first day of working on the customers project, the contractor drove me to the customers house out in the country in order to measure the customers house. As I was designing the customers addition, the contractor would not give me the customers  contact info even though I asked for it so I could talk to her and give her great ideas and choices about her design. The contractor wanted total control of the project. Therefore, until now, there was no way for me to contact her.
The customer called me at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, August 20 2025.She was upset because I would have to find where I stored them.  On Thursday, August 21st at 10 a.m. (less than 24 hours) I met the customer and gave her drawings back to her. The customers comment was that the contractor told her that as the contractor, it was his responsibility and he should have picked up her original house plans .
Moral of the story: If you are designing an addition to your home and have the money to hire a contractor and a custom home designer,DO NOT give full control to the contractor. There should be a lot of communication between the homeowner and the designer so the homeowner ends up with a great design and avoid problems such as this one. Typically speaking, a contractor that dosent allow communication between the homeowner and their designer wants to limit their choices and keep them uneducated, typically building it as cheap as possible. The contractor dosent want the homeowner to have any ideas because it costs more money. This way the contractor maximizes their profits.
Homeowners should be able to improve their conservations with there contractor by having a plan that they understand and well thought out. This is achieved by working with a custom home designer or Architect, and not by the contractor keeping them apart. This process should be a team effort.
