As a celiac, I struggle to find safe places to eat. Maumee Bay Brew Pub does not have a separate, gluten-free menu, so I asked the waiter whether the kitchen could and would take necessary safety protocols to prepare an allergy-safe meal. He didn't know, but asked. Turns out the Sous Chef, Becky, was well versed in gluten allergies and celiac disease and assured him she would make something safe, as long as I stayed away from foods out of the fryer. I choose the Teriyaki Salmon with rice pilaf and grilled asparagus. Matt, our waiter, came back and asked if soy/soy sauce was an issue (as Becky had gone over the recipe.) Most are not safe, so we decided to replace with the redskin mashed potatoes. He then returned and announced that the base for the potatoes was not celiac safe and listed safe options. When he served my meal he listed the precautions taken: new jackets for those who worked on my food, new gloves, cleaned/sanitized pots/work area, and Becky instructing them carefully about precautions. I had steamed asparagus and broccoli rather than grilled, as the grill could not be guaranteed safe. The food was DELICIOUS, and I felt so safe and reassured by all Becky and Matt did to make sure I wouldn't have an allergic reaction. Matt worked very hard to learn about the allergy and safety precautions and Becky did everything necessary to ensure a safe and delicious meal. I really appreciate the staff at Maumee Bay Brew Pub and plan to return.
