Joe Logan price gouged during a heat wave and charged me ~48% more than the competition. He also intentionally denied me timely information about the cost of replacement instead of a temporary fix for an 18-year-old AC system, forcing me to make an uninformed decision on the spot on how to best proceed. On 6/15, my home climbed to 90 degrees and I called Joe. On 6/16, Bill, a tech, determined there was a leak, which could cost $1800 to find, and refrigerant levels were low. He said R-22 cost $200/lb but without fixing the leak, the problem remains. I asked about replacement cost. Bill could not answer and called Joe. Bill then told me Joe would call and stop by later and asked me if I wanted him to add the refrigerant. Without the replacement cost quote and the sunk cost of the diagnostic fee, I told him to proceed thinking it would be more costly to have them return later or get another quote for R-22 elsewhere as I would have to pay another service fee if the replacement cost was unaffordable. All Joe did when he entered my home was take a measurement of the evaporator coil panel, which could have easily been done over the phone. Joe charged me $429, $89 for the diagnostic fee and $340 for 1.7 pounds of R-22. I later recalled that the AC was serviced when tenants occupied the property. In June 2018, the AC repair cost was $170 with R-22 at $80/lb. In May 2020, the AC repair cost was $165 with R-22 at $45/lb. I called a couple of AC companies to get quotes for diagnostic, labor and R-22; they are currently charging $75-$90 per pound for R-22. When I texted Joe the information about competitor R-22 pricing, his response was his price includes diagnosis and labor so he is in the same ballpark. However, with diagnostic, labor and materials (R-22), other companies are currently charging $263 to $322 for the same work; Joe charged 33%-63% more than the competition. An online search shows Ability Refrigerants sell R-22 for $40-$75 per pound depending on the tank size.
