Brought my car in (1996 BMW 328is) for a routine alignment. While doing the alignment the technician broke the passenger inner and outer tie rod, resulting in my vehicle being undriveable.
After getting my immediate supervisor, section chief, midas corporate, and my First Sergeant involved- They still would not budge. I was not informed of anything being seized, rusted, worn, or otherwise unserviceable. Simply got a call saying that my car was broken and that it would cost parts + labor from my pocket to repair. This is completely unacceptable as this is my wife and I's only vehicle. Also being quoted 600$ for a service requiring a 50-75$ part and 1-2 hours of time when done by an amateur.
After calling and emailing midas corporate, the best the shop manager would negotiate to is "we will use your part, but you'll still have to pay us labor" which if i bought the part, and paid the labor- is completely for lack of a better word shafting me when it is the shop's mistake, and i was NOT notified that any work on the car may result in damage.
I have repaired the vehicle myself, using the auto hobby shop on base, the part I bought, and 2 hours of my time. (the part being a set of passenger and driver side tie rods, costing about $115 shipped)
This shop is notorious for up charging upwards of 400% on parts and labor estimates that are ludicrous. And most of the uninformed airmen/dependents on base, they simply do not know any better and happily get fleeced for their hard earned money.

    Business Response

    To whom it may concern,

The customer came in for an alignment, we were informed this vehicle has been sitting for a long period of time. Upon making the adjustments with a standard wrench on the tie rod nut. The tie rod separated, I attached pictures to show the rusted tie rod and the separation. The vehicle has extreme rust on the tie rods that has eatten away at the metal causing it to weaken. The tie rod part itself is approximately half inch thick of steal. For it to separate with pressure from a wrench, and a man, which that the part is designed to allow for such adjustments is a clear indicator the part is erroded and weakened. We informed the customer promplty when it happend, showed and tried to work with the customer from a discount to even as easy as the customer bring us the part and we would install it at no charge per customer service. Customer declined all offers. We did not charge the customer anything and pointed out that it's a good thing it happened here, given if driving the vehicle the right bump could of easily separated causing significant damages or even injury.
