I was referred by my primary care doctor to get a colonoscopy. I was told that my health insurance would cover it. I made sure of that prior to making the appointment because I am disabled and unemployed. Now, I get a bill for $1,443.00 which I can not and will not be able to pay. I can't afford to make payments, because I'm on **** and unemployed and will never be able to work again due to a previous documented health issue.

I have been blatantly lied to by people I trusted.

File a complaint for unethical billing practices and lack of informed consent for procedure that was supposed to be 100% covered by insurance and discussed that I was there particularly because I turned 45 and insurance covers colonoscopy screening. I have preexisting condition, discussed and acknowledged, and also acknowledged that my preexisting condition IBS-D was not why I requested the procedure Dr acknowledged and agreed, see notes from after visit summary from initial encounter noting screening ( covered by insurance) not diagnostic ( not covered) She later billed the procedure as diagnostic without my knowledge or any discussion of her plans, so I have a bill for 1700+ from her office because of the way she coded the procedure. I have reached out to insurance, they advised to ask dr to recode, which I did, she has refused, saying I had another complaint, it was clearly that my preexisting condition is not why i went for the colonoscopy and she acknowledged in my after visit summary as well. If she had told me before hand, she planned to code as diagnostic and take biopsies, I could of made an informed decision to proceed with the procedure that would then not be covered. I am filing a complaint because at no time was this communicated to me. I think this is unethical and in violation of the federal law "no surprises act". I think that her actions were intentional, that no good faith estimate was provided to me, because the expectation that insurance would cover procedure at 100%. I have received a bill for over 1700.00 for the procedure. See attachments. I need to dr to recode the procedure so that insurance will cover the procedure as intended. If she is unwilling to recode, I need her to waive the entire procedure fee in accordance with the no surprises act

I have not heard from the business in response to my complaint.
I have since reached out to a patient advocacy group that has advised me to file a complaint with the state for insurance fraud. See attached.  I realize the impact this could have on the physician and really don't want to do so. However,  will, if no response is received. I've done additional research and have found that a pre diagnosis of IBS-d does not warrant a change to diagnostic exam. I've further reviewed that the finding of ACA said the findings and removal of polyps should still be covered by insurance. Bottom line, her intent to file my exam as billable and not covered by insurance SHOULD of been communicated to me prior to the procedure,  so I could make an informed decision on how to proceed. Especially since the exam to be performed covered by insurance since I am 45 and my previous IBS-d diagnosis was specifically discussed and noted in my after visit summary from February.
