Went to the dentist for a regular cleaning. Decided to get the teeth whitening. So, as the hygienist is going through the procedure... she starts rubbing a greasy substance my lips. I had this thing in my mouth so I used my phone to ask her what it was because it immediately began burning my lips. She proceeded to say, "Oh it's just some lip gloss to keep your lips moist while we are going through the procedure" I immediately shook my head and she says it again while saying it's harmless. I thought in my mind, "Oh, she nuts.... or the fact that I'm allergic isn't in my file." So I texted her.. "I'm allergic to lip gloss!" She says, "Huh?" I continue texting... "I'm allergic to ALL makeup!" So she panicking, "Oh my God! Oh my God!" I text again, "It's burning. Take it off!" She's apologizing, "I'm so sorry! This has never happened before. I have never heard this before! I further texted, "My EpiPen is outside!" She says, "Don't worry.. I'm taking it off. Use the suction and dont swallow." How are you? Are you okay?" I text back, "My lips are burning. They may blister." She apologized again. Long story short the hygienist was careful in explaining the process to me but I was never asked if I had any allergies. She also never explained the lip gloss part until after applying. And while I sat there and completed the process in pain... I wasn't even asked if I wanted to stop the process. It never dawned on me to add makeup to my list of allergies at a dentist. But my experience was a painful one and I spent the rest of the day ensuring my throat didnt fully close. The dentist didnt even come check on me. They sent me a picture of the ingredients. It was the beeswax for sure. I'm sure the car wax (Caranuba) didnt help either. My results would have gone differently and been better had I not been experiencing the burning on my lips and swelling in my throat.
