On Wednesday, 9/25/2025 around 3:00 p.m., my elderly mother-in-law and I entered Smitty's Barber shop. She is primarily a shut-in and decided she may feel more comfortable and economical patronizing a barber shop for a simple, no-frills hair cut. (She is recently widowed, and she and her late husband had routinely exchanged DIY hair cuts.) The gentleman, I understand not to be Smitty, the owner, but his son-in-law was on duty. The shop was empty, and the barber sat in a customer's booth chair engaging with his cell phone. He glanced up and said, "Y'all need a hair cut? I don't do ladies' hair." I was stunned and laughed a little, hoping he was joking. He repeated, "I don't. I just don't. I don't do ladies' hair." I replied, "I don't know how you get away with that in 2025." My mother-in-law assured him she just wanted the back lobbed off and did not care about style. He continued to dismiss and repeated, "I do not cut ladies' hair." There was no context, nor explanation of his skill/training limitations. We left and ended up at a salon down the road for her overdue haircut. However, I returned to Smitty's Barber shop to offer him the courtesy of my intent to file legal complaints, as his refusal to cut a female's hair was discriminatory and not in compliance with the law. He shrugged and again stated, "I don't." I informed him I did not play these small-town, small-minded games and to expect to hear from one of the organizations I listed. At the time of my re-entrance, he had a male customer in his chair and another male customer sitting in a chair facing the booth. They said nothing. My mother-in-law bore witness to this second encounter, as well.
