Mr. J***** was paid to complete a job for $6,300. He was to make minor repairs, install laminate flooring in a hallway and three bedrooms, repair four upstairs doors and install the doorknobs, install a light fixture in the master bathroom, convert a bedroom into a walk-in closet and we agreed on not replacing the stairs, but to clean and stain the stairs. He also had to put a hole in the Family Room ceiling to access the upstairs master bathroom due to a drainage problem. He has not returned to finish the repair of the ceiling. Several things he had to go over because he worked so fast that he would forget things and not finish other things. He did not clean up from painting or take care not to leave paint spots or spillage where it's not supposed to be. Most of his work was satisfactory and then he started having excuses as to why he was not coming to finish the work. He would say he was coming at a particular time, but would not show up and did not call or communicate. When there wasn't much left to be done, he asked for final payment because it was Christmas and I paid him. He said he always honored his word. Instead of completing my work, he took on other jobs and expected me to wait. When I told him I wanted the return of my final payment, he said he had already finished. I told him he was not finished and sent him the list of things left to be done. He then told me that he was doing me a favor with other stuff. He was paid for everything he asked to be paid for. If he did things for free, it was his choice. I have not heard from him since Tuesday February 6, 2024 after he received the list I sent him. Now I have to find someone to complete the mess he left and pay them.

    Business Response

According to the contract signed by both the client and myself, I completed all the work I was paid to complete. My work was on the heels of another worker who had made a mess of the client's home. The client complained about messes that the previous worker had made. She repeatedly made long lists of minor repairs that were NOT part of our contract and required them to be completed before she would pay me. I did everything she asked me to do on these lists each day, as that is how often she gave me a new list, even though it was often something the previous worker had messed up. I did my best to work with the client for as long as I could. I cannot be held responsible for another worker or their mess and work for free. I returned to the house 3 more times after the final payment, continuing to do work I was not paid for since it wasn't in the contract because I thought I was helping out the client. I finally realized she would not be satisfied with any amount of work short of fixing every single thing the previous worker had messed up. Since that was not what we had agreed upon nor what I had been paid to do, I had to move on.

I am just now receiving this information containing a Response due to my computer shutting down and a virus. This so-called handyman is a liar.  He never returned after I paid him and he knew he was not finished with things that "HE" messed up, not the prior contractor.  He cut a hole in my ceiling in the room underneath the bathroom that had been renovated and did not come back to finish covering it.  I never asked him to do anything that I wasn't willing to pay him for.  The punch list grew because he kept messing up stuff that "HE" did.  Any extra things that he was asked to do he was paid for.  Some of his work was good, but some of it was messy and unfinished.  He never cleaned up behind himself and left everything dirty and dusty.  He made the choice not to discuss how he felt with me and just never came back when he knew he had left things undone. He may have been paid appropriately had he communicated with me, finished the job and cleaned up the mess he made instead of leaving and never returning.  I paid him even though he lied about his family not having any food.  Any work he did without charge was because he said there was no charge for his work or for the materials.  His word isn't worth anything.
