Animas Automotive lost the key FOB for my car. I want them to pay for a replacement key FOB

    Business Response

    Date: 08/12/2025

    Dear ******** *******,

Thank you for reaching out. My staff and I have been dealing with the fallout from Mr. ****'s visit for several months. Even after he left, we continued to search for his key, thoroughly examining the front office and surrounding perimeter. However, we've had to conclude that he wouldn't have been able to drive away unless the key was already on his person, as we've stated repeatedly in our letters to the credit card company.

I'm attaching copies of those letters, along with Mr. ****'s initial complaint about the lost key and his second complaint regarding alleged non-standard parts. It appears he's attempting to build a case for a full refund of the service.

One detail not included in our communication with the credit card company is that the yellow key tag Mr. **** referred to as his "spare" was actually for a 2012 VW Touareg (VIN# *****************) that he had sold prior to acquiring his current vehicle. We had also serviced that Touareg previously.

On the day Mr. **** claimed we lost his keys, I attempted to start his car with the two keys he was holding, and as expected, it did not start. I then asked him to switch places with me, and I handed those keys to my staff, who were standing between the vehicle's headlamps and our building. The car started with Mr. **** alone inside. At that point, I pointed to a key bulging in his front left pocket and suggested, "****, I think the key is in that pocket." He became very angry with me. I handed him the other two keys, and he drove away.

He was also upset when we informed him that his car battery was original and had never been replaced. He was particularly frustrated when we couldn't reprogram the key for his 2012 vehicle to work with his 2013 model, and again when a new aftermarket key he had ordered also couldn't be programmed. We advised him that he would need to drive to Albuquerque to see the dealer, but he stated that wasn't possible.

While I can't offer a medical explanation for Mr. ****'s behavior, I can share a personal experience. I cared for my father during the last three years of his life, which was often challenging. He experienced days of joy but also days where he became angry over minor inconsistencies in his routine, which eventually led us to take his car away. He did have a diagnosis.
