First of all, there is no resolution in this matter. I would like to see others avoid the mistake I made of taking my animal to this vet.I have been a client for a number of years and have been well pleased with this vet, however in the past few years, there has been a change in her methods and attitude. Prior to this event, I had taken a horse with colic symptoms and the outcome was good. She intubated the horse, administered mineral oil and other additives and everything was fine. In this instance, I had a horse showing signs of colic, beginning on Sunday morning. I did the normal stuff one does for this and improvement was shown but came back on Monday morning. I called the vet and made arrangements to get the horse in on Tuesday morning at 8 am. The original estimate for just the emergency was quoted to me at around $230. This included the exam, a shot of banamine and a tube of banamine paste to take home for pain. When we arrived, and after filling out the paperwork, the vet looked at the horse, listened to her gut sounds, took temp and administered a shot of banamine. Waited for a couple of hours and when checked again, it was stated by the vet that she was worried about dehydration and would need an IV for fluids. I was given an estimate of $1700, which I could not afford. When I declined this, at the front desk, I was immediately given the original estimate billing, which I paid, but I was not given the banamine paste for pain. When I asked about it, I was told by the staff that I could not have it because the horse was dehydrated. FINE. The problem here is NOT the fact that the estimate was $1700, although that IS exorbitant in my opinion. The problem is the vet would not speak to me about what I could do alternately, (like maybe the intubation and fluids), but the fact that she didn't even consider the option that the horse may need to be put down. She just sent us home to let the horse SUFFER through this. THIS after being a client for 10 years. Thanks.
