Asked for a cab to the Commons at the corner of ***** St. next to the ***********. I was told that the taxi was already downtown and the expected wait time was 5 - 10 minutes. After waiting for 25 minutes, called again and was told that the taxi "would be there momentarily." I waited for 15 more minutes and called again, this time getting no answer. Upon redial, the woman that I had spoken to previously said thar she was re-sending the same cab, a blue van, #15. She also said that the taxi had been to the pickup spot previously and had waited for me for 10 minutes. I had been at the pickup spot for for around 40 minutes at this time and disputed the driver's claim, a driver named Jamie, I learned later. I inquired at this time if I would be charged full fare for the ride, taking into consideration both the falsely quoted time of arrival and the apparent dishonesty of the driver involved. The woman became confrontational at this time, telling me "either pay full fare or cancel." I had no other way home. I paid the full fare after waiting 10 more minutes for a different driver and taxi. The woman dispatcher, Debra, was rude, dismissive and left me with the feeling of being totally un-important to the business and at her and the company's whim as to whether I got service or not. I do not mind waiting for taxi service, it is a part of using the service, but this scenario has occurred with this dispatcher on many occasions. Mis-quotes are often given, even though it is understood that these are only rough estimates since the dispatcher is not actually in the car. I do not expect anything other than a calculated guess, and am fine with that.
When misquotes are given by Ithaca Dispatch, as a tactic to string out waiting times, it is an unfair business practice. I am sure that other riders have experienced this and would encourage them to speak out. Otherwise Ithaca Dispatch will continue this routine of customer abuse as there is little or no competition for them. I would very much like to see Ithaca become a more friendly market to competitive companies, otherwise Ithaca Dispatch has no incentive to do a better job, their monopoly needs to be addressed.
