BBB has received a pattern of consumer complaints alleging sales practice issues, delivery issues and refund issues. Complaints allege consumers are approached, at home or while shopping, by individuals claiming to be high school seniors or college students trying to raise money by selling magazine subscriptions to earn points for a trip. Based on complaint information the average single magazine subscription is approximately $60. Many consumers claim to have purchased multiple magazines and paid cash or by check. On the receipt it states "DELIVERED WITHIN 120 DAYS FROM DATE OF TRANSACTION"; however some consumers have been waiting for the magazines for nearly 6 months.
Most consumer complaints claim magazine delivery either exceeds the 120 days or are never delivered. Most complainants state they are unable to contact the company; the call goes directly to voice mail, the mailbox is full and cannot leave a message. Emails are sent to the company but no responses are received. Some consumers that have already cancelled the subscription have been waiting for their refund for as long as 8 months.
Some complainants claim they are told by the sales rep they have 2 weeks to cancel and checks are not cashed during that time period. However, the receipt clearly states, in part "...CHECKS DEPOSITED IMMEDIATELY" and "THE BUYER MAY CANCEL THIS TRANSACTION ANYTIME PRIOR TO MIDNIGHT OF THE THIRD BUSINESS DAY"
BBB has received responses for many of the complaints, however, there are some that remain unresolved and others that are unanswered. A typical first response from the company is "No Problem. I will refund your money ASAP!" When consumers indicate they still have not received a refund, the company response is generally the same.
To date the company has failed to address the pattern.
