On December 16th, 2022, I underwent a mammogram procedure and was told that I had what was probably calcification in my left breast and that I should have a biopsy. On January 13th, 2023, I underwent the biopsy and fortunately, the results were negative, and I am currently in good health. According to my insurance documents, my insurance paid $4,077.87 and indicated that I might owe $3,534.91. Lovelace decided to bill me the latter amount. I don't believe that $3,534.91 is a reasonable charge to me in this case. Note, this procedure was minor, diagnostic, in-network, and largely covered by insurance. And not uncommon. If the charge for such a procedure is standard, preventative healthcare would be out of reach for me and nearly anyone else. Had Lovelace told me what my cost would be, I would have declined as I felt the attending physician was being overly cautious. I have attempted twice to open communication with Lovelace and have been ignored both times (I would note that when I asked a benign question earlier this year using the same messaging via *******, they responded in the same day). In my first message to Lovelace on 10/16/2023 regarding this statement, I asked if they had documentation showing that they had presented to me my out-of-pocket cost in advance of the procedure, because while I keep excellent records, I did not have such a document. I received no response. In my second message to Lovelace on 10/19/2023, I requested that they reduce my statement to $300. Again, no response. I am attaching these messages for your review. Because Lovelace did not go over the costs with me in advance, violating state and federal healthcare transparency laws, I believe that $300 for my share is a reasonable amount for this relatively minor, in-network, diagnostic, covered-by-insurance procedure.
