According to information supplied by the company, ASCAP, which is headquartered in New York City, has offices in seven cities and licensing managers throughout the country. It is the first performing rights organization in the U.S., founded in 1914 by a visionary group of songwriters including Victor Herbert, Irving Berlin, John Phillip Sousa and James Weldon Johnson. ASCAP is a membership association owned by its members who are songwriters, composers and music publishers. ASCAP operates on a not-for-profit basis. Over 500,000 U.S. members use ASCAP as a clearinghouse for collecting royalties on over eight million copyrighted musical works, representing virtually every musical genre. In addition, ASCAP has agreements with over 100 foreign organizations that license the right to perform copyrighted works in their countries. Consequently, ASCAP customers can use the works of the foreign societies' members as well through an all-inclusive ASCAP blanket license.
