Everything was going fine. My tutor was great. I was enjoying my ******s. The platform had a weird glitch one time, but then it was fine. Everything was peachy until... it wasn't.The day right after my ****** with my teacher, I get a bunch of notifications about ******s being cancelled. I first think it's a glitch, but still open the app to check. All my ******s had indeed been cancelled with no explanation. Still thinking something had gone wrong on Verbling's end, I tried to buy ******s with my teacher, but it told me I couldn't.Without any explanation from Verbling (I only got ONE email about one of my ******s being cancelled) besides the cryptic "deactivating user" on their website and no way to contact my teacher, I wrote to Verbling about my issue but since they can take up to 48h to reply to you, I decided to take matters into my own hands.I managed to track down my tutor somewhere else on the World Wide Web, not that they defied Verbling's silly policy of not sharing any way for students to reach out to teachers outside the website, but I'm very good with Google.I got their side of the story: Verbling's new parent company wanted teachers to do a background check. They tried doing it, but the website didn't work properly. They looked at other teachers' profiles and saw others had not completed the background check, so they figured it was optional. But their account was deleted without prior warning because the background check was not completed.Did some research on said background check. Turns out it's on a third-party website that none of the teachers I found a Reddit thread had heard of, and said website was asking for their Social Security Number (SSN), so many were understandably reluctant to go through the background check if it meant giving something that can be used to steal your identity to an unknown entity.Oh, and I finally heard back from Verbling and their only explanation was that my teacher "didn't agree to terms set up by Verbling." No mention of the background check or their total lack of transparency. They also suggested I simply find another teacher on their platform. Not like I spent months with the same teacher and formed a bond with them.The only way I will return to Verbling is if they reinstate my teacher (who has contacted them about doing the background check and get help if it doesn't work like the last time they tried to do it). Even then, my trust in Verbling is completely gone.
