Important Information

Advertising Review

BBB promotes truth in advertising by contacting advertisers whose claims conflict with the BBB Code of Advertising. These claims may come to our attention from our internal review of advertising, consumer complaints and competitor challenges.  BBB asks advertisers to prove their claims, change ads to make offers more clear to consumers, and remove misleading or deceptive statements.

On February 20, 2025 BBB of Western Pennsylvania requested that the business substantiate, modify, or discontinue its advertised claims on the business’s website and social media pages to comply with the BBB Code of Advertising. Below are the outstanding challenges which can be found at https://treeserviceeriepa.com/ and each challenge below is referenced by its corresponding BBB Code of Advertising Principle.

Challenge #1 Refer to the BBB Code of Advertising Principle #1:  Basic Principles of the Code

The primary responsibility for truthful and non-deceptive advertising rests with the advertiser. Advertisers should be prepared to substantiate any objective claims or offers made before publication or broadcast. Upon request, they should present such substantiation promptly to the advertising medium or BBB. Advertisements which are untrue, misleading, deceptive, fraudulent, falsely disparaging of competitors, or insincere offers to sell, shall not be used. An advertisement as a whole may be misleading by implication, although every sentence separately considered may be literally true.  Misrepresentation may result not only from direct statements, but by omitting or obscuring a material fact.

1a.  with a small team of certified arborists

1b.  our personnel are certified tree doctors

1c.  two decades of experience in tree care

Challenge #2  Refer to the BBB Code of Advertising Principle #36:  Environmental Benefit Claims

Advertisers should not make broad, unqualified general environmental benefit claims like “green” or “eco-friendly.”  Advertisers must qualify general claims with specific environmental benefits.  Advertisers must possess competent and reliable evidence (often scientific evidence) to support all environmental benefit claims. Qualifications for any claim must be clear, conspicuous and understandable.  When an advertiser qualifies a general claim with a specific benefit, the benefit should be significant. Advertisers must not highlight small or unimportant benefits.

2a.  Eco-Friendly Practices

We noted that several photos used on Tree Service Erie’s advertising also appear on other websites which do not appear to be affiliated with Tree Service Erie.  If images are not owned by Tree Service Erie we request that this be disclosed on the company’s website to better manage consumer expectations.
