In May 2021, BBB investigated “Calian Group”/“Calians Group”
following a consumers request to verify the company legitimacy prior to further
entertaining the employment opportunity presented. BBB reviewed the employment
document and discovered irregularities with the visual quality of the document,
the logo used and the stamped emblem. Multiple spelling and grammatical errors
were also noted on the document.
During the investigative process, BBB gathered details that led to
the discovery that the employment opportunity presented to the consumer was a
scam. The individuals behind the operation were falsely presenting themselves
by illegally using the brand of the legitimate business Calian Ltd, and posing
as representatives recruiting for available employment positions.
The following are listed findings of the investigation:
BBB performed a domain registry search which indicated that www.caliansgroup.com (imposter) was registered and created on 2021-03-16. Registrant information was privacy protected.
BBB cross referenced the text and images used on www.caliansgroup.com (imposter). In doing so, it was discovered the text, logo and images were plagiarized directly from www.calian.com- the website belonging to the legitimate entity Calian Ltd.
BBB contacted Calian Ltd to discuss whether the website www.caliansgroup.com (imposter) was a division of the legal entity. BBB was advised that although the company does use reference to Calian Group, the business in question is NOT connected to Calian Ltd and individuals are posing as representatives of the company and hiding behind the name of a legitimate business.
Although at first glance the website belonging to the imposters www.caliansgroup.com appears to be legitimate, several inconsistencies were discovered that also led BBB to believe the content was plagiarized. In example, the website contained no Privacy Policy, Accessibility Policy, or any page detailing legalities. Additionally, the website contained a menu selection for Careers, and when the “Careers with Calian” was selected in the drop down, the displayed webpage contained a paragraph with the words “Career Opportunities” hyperlinked. By clicking the hyperlink, the page redirected the viewer to the legitimate website of Calian Ltd on their Career Opportunities page. By not clicking the hyperlink, the viewer of the page would scroll to be informed of the career opportunities the imposters were “offering”.
The listed phone number for the business in question 587-208-4254 possesses the area code (587) assigned to the province of Alberta, Canada. An internet search was conducted for the phone number, to which no immediate results linking the number to a reputable business were produced. Attempts to reach the business via telephone were unsuccessful.
The operating address of the business in question 340 Legget Drive, Kanata Suite 101 is the former address for the legal entity Calian Ltd. Calian Ltd is currently operating at 770 Palladium Drive 4th floor, Kanata.
In
the discussion with Calian Ltd, the company provided the following statement to
share with the general public concerning the scam:
"It has come
to our attention that
there are individuals posing as Calian
representatives to elicit money from job seekers. These scams promise jobs in
return for a variety of so-called employment related payments. Please be aware
that Calian does not request any sort of payments as part of the hiring
process. Calian intends to cooperate with law enforcement agencies when such
frauds are reported. Accordingly, please report all fraudulent employment
offers to Calian at [email protected] and
notify the police or other competent authority. Please
note that Calian is not responsible for the acts of these imposters or any
losses that may be attributable to their actions.
Calian is hiring and current job openings can be found at http://www.calian.com/careers. If you
find a position that interests you, please apply online by submitting your
resume."
