Better Business Bureau of Greater Maryland, alongside a team of dedicated volunteers, provided free document shredding to more than 2,000 attendees on Saturday, April 26, during its 18th annual Shred Day event.

In 2024, the Federal Trade Commission received more than 131,031 reports of fraud and identity theft from Maryland residents alone, highlighting the ongoing importance of protecting personal information. Shred Day is part of BBB’s national effort to combat identity theft by safely disposing of sensitive documents. The event offered free, secure document destruction at two convenient locations—White Marsh and Timonium—where attendees could drive through without leaving their vehicles.

“Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for Marylanders to protect themselves from identity theft,” said Mike DiGiacomo, President and CEO of BBB Greater Maryland. “Shred Day is a tangible way we fulfill our mission of advancing marketplace trust—by helping consumers safeguard their personal information and supporting education efforts that make our communities stronger.”

The BBB Greater Maryland Foundation hosts Shred Day as its primary fundraiser. Although shredding services were provided at no cost, donations were welcomed and appreciated. This year, a record-breaking $4,833 was raised to support consumer education, scam prevention awareness, and business resource programs.

Iron Mountain, BBB’s Shred Day partner for more than six years, supplied mobile shred trucks and a team of professional technicians to perform on-site shredding. Volunteers from BBB Accredited Businesses, board members, and students from CCBC Upward Bound and Towson High School worked together to unload bags and boxes of documents. 100 percent of the shredded paper is recycled.

Shred Day attendees received identity theft prevention tips and sponsor giveaways. Sponsors included: Maryland Heating & Air, Tar Heel Construction Group, Thunder Bay Roofing, CARCHEX, McCormick & Company, Inc., Aaction Home Repairs, Von Paris Moving & Storage, Strategic Factory and Strongtower Insurance and Iron Mountain.
