
BBB Greater Maryland: Combat identity fraud with free document destruction at annual Shred Day event

Identity theft continues to be a growing concern for Marylanders, with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reporting billions lost to fraud annually. To help combat this issue, BBB of Greater Maryland Foundation is hosting its 18th annual Shred Day, offering free document shredding. Last year, Shred Day serviced over 1,400 Marylanders, providing secure, eco-friendly, on-site document destruction courtesy of Iron Mountain, an AAA-certified company by the National Association of Information Destruction.

Date: Saturday, April 26, 2025
Time: 8:00am to 11:00am or until the shred trucks are full

Limit: Attendees can bring up to 4 bags or boxes of documents

- According to the FTC, identity theft accounts for a significant portion of fraud reports each year.
- In 2023, consumers reported over $10 billion lost due to identity fraud.
- There is an identity theft case reported every 22 seconds in the U.S.
- FTC data shows that individuals aged 30-39 report the highest instances of identity fraud.
- Victims of identity theft often experience financial hardship and mental health challenges, including anxiety and depression.

As the largest annual fundraiser benefiting the BBB Greater Maryland Foundation, donations are appreciated via cash or online. Contributions support efforts to investigate scams, promote ethical business practices and provide consumer education. Additionally, participants will receive identity theft prevention tips, sponsor giveaways and a swag bag.
