“I honestly couldn’t think of anything,” said Amenate Botus, Principal. “My life revolved around everything everyone else wanted. I was working at a corporate 9:00AM-whenever job, plus I had a family.”
Amenata always had an entrepreneurial spirit, inspired by a family history of business ownership, so seven years ago, she took the leap. After years of working for others in the corporate world, the desire to set her own goals and direction became undeniable. Botus Consulting Services was born out of this drive—to provide financial consulting that is more than just a transaction, but a partnership. Botus Consulting Services was founded on a simple yet powerful idea: to build something meaningful, not just for the business, but for herself and her clients.
“My great grandmother owned a bakery, my grandmother was a seamstress, and other family members were musicians and upholsterers,” Botus said. “The entrepreneurial spirit is in my DNA.”
Botus Consulting Services LLC offers tax preparation, financial statement compilation, financial statement review, internal controls review, bookkeeping, and business advisory financial services.
The business operates on the philosophy of “teaching clients how to fish.” The goal isn’t just to provide a report or end of year taxes, but to ensure that clients understand the why and how of their financial management. By demystifying complex financial concepts, the firm equips clients with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions.
“At its core,” Botus said, “the company is all about empowerment. This approach fosters a sense of confidence and independence, making clients active participants in their financial well-being.”
The journey from starting as a side business to a full-fledged consulting firm wasn’t without its challenges. In the early days, the Botus Consulting Services was built while juggling other commitments, like working a full-time corporate job and being a mother, which made time management a major obstacle. Botus said the biggest lesson learned was the importance of delegation and investing in the right resources. There was also the realization that using personal funds to finance a business wasn’t the best approach—bank loans would have provided a more strategic financial foundation. Through trial and error, the transition from working “in” the business to working “on” the business became clear, leading to a more sustainable and structured operation.
Growing the business has been a mix of organic reach and strategic advertising. One of the key lessons has been the importance of evaluating what marketing efforts truly work. Constantly asking clients how they discovered Botus Consulting Services has helped refine outreach strategies and improve visibility. Another essential tool for success has been leveraging technology. QuickBooks has proven to be an invaluable asset, streamlining financial processes and enabling better management of client accounts.
“Beyond technology,” Botus explained, “the most critical resource has always been people and my experience of managing teams, whether professionally or as a mom, has played a significant role in shaping my business.”
What makes running Botus Consulting so fulfilling is the autonomy and the ability to implement personal dreams. Working long hours for someone else’s vision made it clear that building something independently was the ultimate goal.
“Every effort I put into the business directly benefits me, my family, the firm, and my clients,” Botus said. “This creates a sense of ownership and satisfaction that wasn’t possible in my previous corporate roles.”
Based in Dedham, Massachusetts, Botus Consulting thrives in a location that offers both accessibility and a sense of community. Originally from Trinidad in the West Indies, Botus has lived in Dedham for over a decade, and appreciates its quiet charm and amenities while still being close to Boston and surrounding towns. Beyond business, there’s a strong commitment to giving back. Serving as a board member for the Southwest Boston Community Development Corporation (SWBCDC) where she donates her time and expertise offering insights into state and federal tax breaks on donations.
In addition to financial consulting, Botus has a passion for interior design, gardening, and sustainable construction. This has led to the founding of Amenata’s other business, Botus Services LLC, a remodeling business focused on sustainable materials and energy cost savings.
“It’s a personal passion that turned into another entrepreneurial venture,” Botus said, “proving that business success isn’t just about numbers—it’s also about creating and building something with lasting impact.”
Looking ahead, Botus Consulting remains committed to flexibility and client needs. This adaptability ensures that services are tailored to what works best for each individual or business.
