A holistic healing journey

Maxine Bornstein is the owner and practitioner behind Reiki by the Sea, a holistic healing practice with a main office in Boston. Bornstein also sees clients in Mashpee, MA, and Newport, RI. In the business owner’s interview, she describes her journey into the healing arts, her services, and what she loves about her job.

Bornstein has worked in healthcare for over four decades. “I've been a nurse for over 40 years, and I started taking some classes in a holistic nursing way, way back. I'd say I've always been a holistic nurse, but I attended training programs in holistic practices and nursing techniques. And so that's how I started it.

Bornstein shared that she discovered reiki through her own self-care journey. “I first started working on myself. Then, as I learned reiki along the way, I started practicing on friends and family. I worked for the Department of Public Health for about ten years, and I was a healthcare facility inspector, and we inspected hospitals and nursing homes for quality of care for the state of Massachusetts. So as I did that, I started to offer complimentary reiki treatment sessions to some of the nurses and social workers that I worked with at the Department of Public Health.”

Bornstein described what reiki is and said, “It is an integrative practice. It works with energy healing, and it works for the whole person.” The practitioner continued describing how reiki can help people. “It helps relieve stress and it helps relieve worry. It works on the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual aspects. For a person, it's particularly helpful to help with stress reduction, and it has been shown to help with pain control,” she said.

Bornstein also shared how she became interested in making the healing arts her career. “I always felt energy very strongly. And so even as a child, I wanted to be a nurse when I was just seven. And so, I followed that path to my master's degree in nursing. I always felt energy sharply more than most people. And I grew up on Cape Cod, and I think I was always part of groups of folks that were more in tune with the land. I've always felt energy strongly, and so I couldn't not acknowledge it.” This realization led Bornstein to eventually open Reiki by the Sea. Today, Bornstein offers expanded services at Reiki by the Sea, including wellness enrichment coaching, intuitive energy diagnosis and reiki classes.

Bornstein helps her clients achieve a broad spectrum of goals through wellness enrichment coaching. Whether they’re recovering from an illness, managing stress, seeking clarity on their life path, or exploring their intuitive and creative potential, Bornstein guides them with a personalized plan for success.

In her intuitive energy diagnosis work, Bornstein employs the Stillpoint Method for evaluating emotional energy, helping clients identify areas where they can access their greatest strengths. This form of energy reading empowers individuals to heal on physical, emotional, spiritual and mental levels.

Additionally, Bornstein's dedication to spreading the benefits of reiki extends to teaching others. She offers comprehensive reiki classes, from the foundational first degree to advanced levels, including Reiki Master Teacher training.

Bornstein spoke from the heart when asked about her favorite part of her job. “Well, there are a lot of favorite parts. I mean, what I love when I'm working on someone with reiki—when they fall asleep and when they wake up and they say, ‘oh my God, I feel so wonderful. Or maybe they'll just say, ‘I can't believe I fell asleep. I haven't been able to sleep in years that well.’”

The business owner then described what she loves about wellness enrichment coaching. “The thing about coaching is that you don't just tell the people what they need to do. It's a combined effort between the client and coach, and we work out a plan of care together, and that is very fulfilling.”

Whether she is practicing reiki, teaching classes, coaching or performing an intuitive energy diagnosis, Bornstein is passionate about helping others. “So when I think about my practice, I most enjoy the ability to offer support and healing techniques to help each client reach their highest and best good."
