Unveiling the wonders of East Africa
Green Zones Safaris operates safari tours in East Africa. With headquarters in Watertown, MA and ground offices in Uganda, the tour operator helps its clients embark on once-in-a-lifetime trips. Those traveling with Green Zones Safaris can encounter amazing wildlife, see breathtaking vistas and learn about East Africa’s vibrant cultural traditions.
Steven Tomusange, director of the company, shared how he entered the tourism industry. “I started as a way of organizing short weekend trips for my friends at school. And then, whenever I would come back with one group, they'd share their experience with others. They were like, wow, he's just a nice tour operator. And they kept on telling me to start a business.”
All the positive feedback encouraged Tomusange to begin a local tour company in Uganda, an East African country, in 2012. He eventually expanded tours into Rwanda. “After years of operations in Uganda and Rwanda, we decided to extend into the entire East African region and include the countries Kenya and Tanzania to form a four-destination safari company,” the business owner said.
Tomusange relocated to Massachusetts and opened Green Zones Safaris’ United States office in 2018 to bring more tourists to East Africa. Most of the tour company’s employees reside in East Africa and facilitate the tours, while Tomusange works with clients to plan their trips.
The tour company founder has always been passionate about travel and described how much he enjoys his job. “The most beautiful thing about my business is, to me, it is more than work. Many people say, hey, it looks to be something that is very hectic, something that will keep you awake all night working. And I'm like, this is not work to me—it is a passion. I'm just following my dream. I used to enjoy a lot of traveling and doing a lot of research about nature and wildlife,” Tomusange said enthusiastically.
Green Zone Safaris offers mid-range to semi-luxury and deluxe luxury all-inclusive safari trips that showcase East Africa’s natural wonders. “We specialize in multi-country tours and combine several destinations into one cohesive itinerary. With our extensive network of reliable service providers in the tourism industry, we're able to offer a wide range of tours that suit the needs of our clients to destinations throughout East Africa,” Tomusange said. In addition, he tailors itineraries for each client to meet their unique requirements on safari.
One of Green Zone Safaris’ most popular experiences is an up-close encounter with the “Big Five” African mammals, which include the lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo. A trek to the summit of Kilimanjaro is another frequently requested experience.
In addition to delivering exciting adventures to travelers, Tomusange is committed to promoting sustainable tourism practices that preserve the pristine beauty of East Africa.
“Many people always ask us about why we chose the name Green Zones Safaris. And I always tell people that here, the nature of our business relies a hundred percent on the existence of nature and the protection of the environment. So, without nature, without wildlife, without natural resources, we shall not be in existence. We chose the name Green Zones because we are so much into conservation. We believe that we are not the last generation. There are many people who are going to come after us, and we want them to enjoy as much as we've been enjoying what God gave us. So that's the name. And ‘green’ basically means a source of life to wildlife, a source of life to even animals that don't feed on grass—at one point in time, they have to benefit from those animals that eat or feed on grass. For example, lions don't eat grass, but they have to feed on antelopes that feed on grass. So green is a source of life, and green is a source of everything, a source of beauty. East Africa, as a land, is known as an area that is always green year in, year out. So that's why the name Green Zones.”
