“Treat customers like you want to be treated” is this business owner’s motto
C&J Construction and Roofing in North Providence, RI, specializes in roofing, gutters, and skylights. Business owner Christopher Jackson shared how he started his business. “I've been a roofer for over 20 years. Before opening C&J Construction and Roofing, I worked for another roofing company, and after several years, I decided to give it a shot myself. My priority was to give customers a good service and deliver a good product. I started out doing small jobs on the weekends and then opened up my business in 2011.” Today, C&J Construction and Roofing is a CertainTeed ShingleMaster certified contractor.
The business owner provided insight into his business philosophy. “When I opened my business, my goal was to create a company that's based on treating people how you'd want to be treated. We show up when we say we’re going to and complete the job as described. I feel like integrity has been lacking in the construction industry for a long time. So, when I'm finished the job and the customer thanks me or thanks our crew and says, ‘you guys did a great job, and thank you for doing what you said you were going to do,’ that's really the best part of it all,” Jackson said.
When asked what he likes best about his work, the contractor said, “The sense of accomplishment—starting a project and seeing the end result and knowing that you were a part of it. I usually always have happy customers. We thrive on that feeling.”
Before launching his own business, Jackson said that he didn’t have the chance to interact much with the customers. “I just always worked for a guy and didn’t meet the people I was working for. Now, I meet different customers from all walks of life and get to know them a little bit. That’s a perk of the job,” the business owner said.
Jackson shared an example of meaningful interaction with a client. “The customer bought a house. The roof wasn't old, and the inspector said that it was great. Soon after she moved in, the roof had a major leak from a huge rainstorm. The house had to be gutted. She contacted the previous roofer, and he couldn't find the source of the leak. She called me for help. I came over, assessed the leak, and stopped it. Not long after, we had another significant rainstorm. The customer called me absolutely thrilled because her home stayed dry—we fixed the issue.”
The business owner continued, “I'm grateful for my customers keeping me in business all this time. While people aren’t exactly excited to spend the money on a roof, I try to make it less painful for them, and it seems they appreciate that.”
When asked what he likes best about living and working in Rhode Island, he said, “I like Rhode Island because it's small. Everything's almost 30 minutes, whatever way you go. It's good for work because word spreads quickly about my business.”
