Popular fencing atmerials
One of the first decisions you will make during your fence installation project is material type. Understand the pros and cons of each material to ensure you make the best decision for your fencing needs.
- Wood fences are durable. From cedar to teak, you'll have many options to choose from. Wood does not warp or shrink, but it will fade over time and is subject to rot or insect damage. Using treated or painted wood can offset those problems.
- Vinyl fences are nearly maintenance-free. Vinyl requires only a light washing to remove dust or dirt. However, vinyl tends to warp, yellow, or crack after years of outdoor exposure.
- Composite fencing allows homeowners to keep the classic wood appearance without problems (rot, insect damage, etc.). Composite material is a mixture of wood fibers and plastic, which makes it slightly more expensive than either wood or vinyl.
- Metal fences are among the most durable and longest-lasting options. Steel, cast iron, wrought-iron, and aluminum require professional installation. Maintenance is very low: spray on an anti-rust coating every few years.
- Concrete and brick fences are durable but costly. Like metal, this type will require a professional installation team.
- Chain link fences are low-cost and do not offer much privacy. Downsides include rust and potential leaning.
Every material comes with its own benefits and drawbacks. Fencing contractors can help you determine which material is best for your desired outcome. Depending on the size and height of your fence, you may need to hire a fence company near you.
Does your fence need a permit?
A permit is usually required for new fence installations.
- If the fence will border a neighbor, you may need their written approval when applying for a permit.
- Check your HOA guidelines for any regulations on fencing.
- Bring drawing plans and photographs when applying for a permit.
- Do not attempt to construct a fence close to a sidewalk, in a way that will block traffic’s view, or build over waterways and other city paths.
Fences constructed within a heavily populated area will need to be inspected before and after construction. Many fencing contractors will offer to manage the permit process for you.
Repair or replace an old fence?
Fences are exposed to the natural elements every day. No matter which material you select or how well you maintain your fence, its appearance will eventually deteriorate. How can you tell if your fence needs a few repairs or if it’s time for a new fence installation? Consider severity versus the cost.
Some common repairs include:
- Tighten or replace loose and worn fasteners and bolts.
- Replace rotted, insect-damaged, split, or missing boards.
- Add a brace or support beam to correct sagging and leaning. New footing may be required for severe cases.
- Retie broken links (for chain link fences) and replace warped rails with new ones. Most chain-link fences can be repaired with pliers.
- Wipe away dirt and add a new coat of paint to refresh the fence's appearance.
If you are debating between repairing your fence and opting for a new fence installation, a fencing contractor can help. Obtain multiple quotes and weigh the cost of repairs against replacement.
