My Pug Happy has been boarding at this facility since they opened. He is now 16 years old and in failing health. He is blind and he has chewing difficulties as well as 1st stage renal failure for which he is on a special diet. Happy takes a 1/2 a pain pill- a vitamin and uses eye drops twice daily. I was concerned that if he passed while he was in their care that my emergency contacts would not know what to do. I contacted a crematorium about what sequence should be followed if he passed while I was gone. When I dropped my pets off I informed the kennel staff of what I had done to simplify the situation if my worst concerns occurred. Not hoping for his demise but being prepared if it should happen. Happy had a couple days there when he did not eat and slept most of the day so they watched him closely which I appreciated. I was informed they felt he has dementia due to his reaction to being placed in an unfamiliar area - change of environment - where he cried and barked while they were cleaning his run. He could not see and was afraid is my guess. He is home now no worse for his stay. After my return home I received a call from the kennel owner / manager who stated they could no longer care for him because of his health conditions. She stated he needs a facility with a veterinarian in attendance. She also stated it would upset the staff- the other dogs their owners - and their routine if they had a dog die while in their care. I know they care for other dogs in declining age and health. They give medications as needed. My concern is now - Happy will be stressed by going to another place- where he does not know the staff or is familiar with the facility. My healthy dog is welcome Also I was told they would still groom him?- there is no chance of him dying then?I feel they have lost their compassion for elder dogs who require a little extra TLC. This should be stated in their advertising and on social media that they can not meet these criteria.
