Gerald Roberts started his Berthoud-based company, Roberts Excavation Corp., in 1991 as a sole proprietor using an aging backhoe. Today, the company has 26 team members and a late-model fleet of vehicles and equipment used in residential, commercial, energy and demolition work throughout Northern Colorado.
Transformation at the Top
When Roberts Excavation was a young company, so was its leader. “I learned the mechanics of the business before I learned leadership,” Gerald said. To remedy this, he began attending seminars to build his leadership skills and his company, a practice that he and now his leadership team continue.
Reinforce and Build
Employees are referred to as “team members” and managers as “team leaders,” the result being a sense of belonging and team spirit to achieve a common goal. The company also holds vendors and suppliers to the same high ethical standards to ensure that job bids reflect the true cost of the proposed job.
Unite the Team
Character First’s 49 Character Traits provide the foundation for how Roberts Excavation operates, from the hiring process to monthly meetings where character traits are spotlighted through PowerPoint, games or discussion.
Project leaders are given the opportunity to run their jobs as they see fit, from scheduling to ordering materials. Gerald maintains an open door for team leaders as well as team members.
Care Plan is a committee composed of three members who decide where and how the company gives back to not only the community, but also to team members. If a team member is struggling at home, Care Plan will step in by providing meals, mentoring or education assistance as a way to show devotion to their well-being.
! Enthusiastically Reinvest
Roberts Excavation makes monthly donations to organizations such as Campus Ministries and Life Choices, and has partnered with Habitat for Humanity since 2004. The company also participates in Living Water International, which provides clean water and shares the gospel to communities around the world.
