I am the executor to my Aunt's estate. I took all of the necessary paper work to Centaur Accounting that has prepared her tax returns the last 4 years. They sent me info that stated due to death date (Nov 2020) the return must be filed by May/21. May 17/21 I received an email that the return was being worked on but now the due date was June 11/21 -more info was needed -they got from her financial advisor on May 20/21. They acknowledged receipt of info- said they would be in touch if any more info needed. I called the company numerous times in June/21 to check on status of return. July2/21 I emailed told them that each time I called I was told return just needed to be printed. I made numerous trips to London in hopes to pick up the return and have completed somewhere else. I live 1.5 hours away. July 12/21 and was reassured that the owner was notified that I had called many times wanting results. July19/2 drove to London and asked again for the return-told it just needed to be printed -that owner still working on return. July 20/21 received request for more info from financial advisor which they had told him they would be in touch if more info needed. 2 months has passed since initial contact between Centaur and financial advisor - he sent additional info July21/21. Aug3/21 I made trip to London to pick up return -still could not get it. Aug 16/21 finally met with owner and she told me it was my responsibility as executor to know what info was needed. I told her that is why we hired her. The invoice for prep was $406.80 and I paid promptly. Between May 17-Aug 16/21 time was wasted. When I filed my Aunt's return she was penalized $8806.35 + arrears interest $2094.82 due to the late filing. All information provided initially should have led an experienced preparer to know more info was needed and was easily acquired from financial advisor. Twice when I inquired about penalties and interest charges due to late filing was told "We will take care of it".
