BBB Investigations Reports a New Phishing Scam
"I want you to send me the list of W-2 copy of employees wage and tax statement for 2015, I need them in PDF file type, you can send it as an attachment. Kindly prepare the lists and email them to me asap"
If the CFO, accountant or payroll service complies with the request, it opens employees to identity theft because W-2's contain employees' full names, addresses, wages and social security numbers.
BBB and Law Enforcement have been responding in recent months to attempts of “CEO Fraud”, where the CFO or accountant is asked by email to wire a payment. The e-mail looks like it comes from the "Boss," but it does not.
BBB advises business and non-profit leaders to inform their CFO's, accountants, and payroll services about this W-2 scam, and other email requests for sending money or confidential information.
When this kind of request is made, the financial person involved should verify the request in a separate communication with the CEO or executive making the request, and not by replying directly to the initial email.
