I gave them $1400 and my application was denied, but they offered no assistance to guide me through the process. That is what I was paying them for (consulting and to help me apply). They did not tell me the order of events required for an approval. They said I would not be eligible for benefits now for 3 years and they would not offer a refund. Not only an I out $1400, I am now out 3 years of benefits for the care of my loved one. I am on limited SS income and this is has caused a financial hardship.Business Response

You gifted the Veterans house to your daughter, we did explain that is gifting and will count against the Veteran. We are here once the Veterans assets are below the allowable amount.Initial Complaint

I payed this company $1,395.00 on 12/11/24. Sent them papers that I could find or gather as I could when requested. I am 77 years old and have to pay a caregiver. In April someone called me to say I made too much money to go any further. I was told that $1,250.00 to my daughter was suffiecent. I was however giving her money for all her expenses, and room and board. They s company knew how much I was making a month from our phone conversation from the 1st day and now I am told I make too much! If I were told I needed to pay my daughter more I would have. All my monthly bills come straight out of my account. When asked in April how much I needed to give my daughter, they said all my check!!!! Which leaves me nothing!!!!! Why was I told $1,250.00 at first and then all of my money in April? I have been deceived.*****Business Response

I was instructed to contact patriot angels to help my disabled veteran father. They instructed him to send em 1900$ to start their process, which was done. They didnt do anything other than call me to do all the leg work for the advocate. Then when questioned they shift blame to the client and refuse to give a refund of the moneys .Business Response
Date: 05/13/2025
To start off, we do not nor have we ever charged $1900? However, we started the process with ******** on 1/30/2024- The assessment that he purchased was completed and 2/08/2024. He then received the ************** Assessment. Along with the assessment we asked if he would like us to assist him with his fathers application for benefits at no additional fee. He signed a Coordination agreement saying we would assist for free but there are documents needed that we can not collect by law. Once the documents are collected we can make the claim before the VA. He was assigned a claims co-oridnator and that co-ordiantor sent out 5 emails and called ******** 5 times, speaking with him twice and leaving 3 voicemails asking for a returned call. By June when we had no response for over 2 months we put the account on hold until ******** reached out to continue the process.Customer Answer

I am rejecting this response because: they are simply out to defraud vets and their families. The context which they insist transpired simply didnt happen this way. Every turn when told I needed to get the information for them, I insisted I didnt have the means to get said info. That was why we paid to have them do all the leg work with their attnys. I was working full time, trying to deal with a sick disabled veteran and feel taken advantage of. As does he. ****** simply wants his monies returned. What ever the exact total was 1300$ or something.

On 1/26/2024 we signed up for **'s service. My father had been diagnosed with dementia. We were told for a fee, PA would take ensure that my father received VA benefits as long as he qualified. I spoke with someone who did an assessment. I got all the required documents that I could, but we had a hang-up over the marriage record, since it happened outside of the country. I got email messages saying that our account was on hold. For a while, we were playing phone/email tag. Then life got busy. My mom was told that PA could not do anything that the VA wouldn't do for free. I called again early last week to ask about a refund. I did not get an answer. A few days later, I was able to speak with someone. I told them my situation. They said the services were the assessment. I explained that I had tried to get a hold of them. They asked when I had last tried. I told them earlier last week, and they said they had no record of it. I gave ***** the number that I had called. She said she would investigate it and get back to me. I told her that I thought PA was supposed to help veterans and that my father was not helped. Her reply was that they are also a business. I would understand if we got through the process and my dad didn't qualify, but the account was put on hold. I couldn't reach them. They said they couldn't reach me. I called them back. ***** said they did find record of the phone call. If they had trouble finding this phone call, could that be the reason they had no record of me trying to get in touch before? I understand that people get into business to make money. What I don't understand is how they can justify taking money people on a fixed income that they haven't helped (No, I don't think an assessment is worth $1,295.) when helping them is their stated purpose. I want them to refund the money. I'm sure that they've helped others, and I'm glad, but they haven't helped my parents. The $1,295 won't impact their bottom line, but it would be huge to my parents.Business Response

Kimmi,
When you began the process with Patriot Angels you were told that the fee was for a Long-term care assessment. You then signed off on the Fee Agreement that you understood what the fee was for and that there are no refunds after the Assessment was completed. You received a 1 on 1 and then a ************** Assessment was produced and sent to you. You then signed an agreement that you wanted us to file an application for you at no additional cost.
We reached out to you on 4 different occasions with no return contact. We then sent you an email letting you know we would put the process on hold until the time that you could pick it up again.
A month later we did a courtesy check in and you said you were teaching and would call us back. We did not receive a call back. That was in May.. In October is when you finally called back saying you wanted to go elsewhere. which of course is your right. However, the fee was for the Long term Care Assessment that you received. We are happy to pick back up and help you with the application whenever you are ready.

I am sorry. I wouldve responded, but I dont recall seeing an email that they had responded. Ive been looking for one. As to them saying, I never contacted them back, they said the same thing to me when I contacted them recently before I filed this complaint. I told them what number I called, and they eventually found that it went to my previous contact there. Initially, they said they had no record of it. I believe the same issue they had when they said they had with no record of my call recently was the same issue they claimed to have had when they said they reached out four times with no response. Glad they feel comfortable taking money from my parents with no actual help provided.Business Response

We contacted Patriot Angels(**), for my mother-in-law that was 92 at such time and surviving spouse of a Veteran, because they advertised as the experts in processing VA Benefit applications and securing approvals timely. We contacted them in early October 2023. The "Intent to File" was completed and filed on 11/9/23. Formal application was filed, with all the Doctors information, 12/5/93. Today is OCTOBER 2, 2024. On April 1, 2024 the ** requested the Doctors information. PA claims it was included with the original application. According to PA this was going to cause an extension for the normal approval period. It is now 11 months from the "Intent to File"; 10 months from the "Original Filing"; and 6 months from the repeat filing of the Medical Doctors representation. This is pathetically bad service from both PA and the VA. My Mother-in-law is 93 with severe kidney issues, dementia, And, is a valid spouse of a VETERAN. Pathetic bad treatment of our Veterans.Business Response

****,
We are frustrated right along with you. When a file gets flagged by the ** it does take longer to process.
The first time was to resend the **** form of which we have proof it was sent the first time. However, when the
VA asks for something it has to be resent. The second time was for proof of payment. Because this is in-home care and the
care provider, (your wife), is being paid more than the clients income, the ** wants to know how the client can pay that.
We have to prove these things and did with CC statements provided by you. We hope this will be approved soon but again we do not get to
make the final decision, we can only respond when the ** has questions of which we did.

Patriot Angels accepted $1365 from my mother when she was clearly not qualified and did not have the ability to answer financial questions for herself. A quick ****** search showed that she did not meet the income and asset requirements for the ** benefit. However, she initiated an engagement with Patriot Angels and they took her money when it was obvious that she wouldn't qualify for the benefit. I contacted Patriot Angels and the payment was non-refundable. They would keep the funds and should she qualify in the future, she would not be charged again. They had a responsibility once they saw her financial records to reimburse the funds and let her know she wasn't qualified. Instead, they are keeping her money because she wasn't aware that she was unqualified for the benefit. This is elder abuse in my opinion and the funds should immediately be returned to her.Business Response

I contacted Patriot Angels on the advice of an assisted living facility that I had visited while trying to find accommodations for my parents in September of 2023. My father is a wartime vet in need of assisted living and my mom qualifies as a spouse in need of memory care. From almost day one it turns out the information I was given was completely inaccurate. I was told I needed to transfer their home title into a trust - not true, I was told that my father did indeed qualify - also not true due to the VAs 3 year look back policy. I was given the contact information for an attorney who would supposedly help with the Trust issues (for a fee of $2000+). When I finished jumping through all the hoops and finally got my folks into a residence, sold their home, and sent all the required paperwork I was then told that they wouldnt qualify because now their assets are over the $155,000 limit to qualify and that they would need to spend down. I then went directly to the VA handbook that addresses this limit and states the profit from the sale of a home is exempt as income. When I asked for clarification/interpretation I am now being ignored. I have asked for my fathers original discharge papers be returned as I will no longer deal in good faith with Patriot Angels. I received an email today saying it has been mailed. No other answers or correspondence on my other concerns. I would not recommend this organization and will definitely advise the facility that recommended them to discontinue doing so.Business Response

*****,
I have looked over your account. You are correct, a house does not count
however, once it is sold, the money does count. We advised you to speak with a VA
Accredited attorney that could give you legal advice. We can not do that. I am having
the manager of the department call you to explain.

I have attached the copies from the VA Codes listing the exclusions. Again, I respectfully disagree with your information. The proceeds from the sale of my parents home are excluded per the attached.

I was referred by A Place for Mom to Patriot Angels (**). PA told me about the VA Aid and Attendance benefit that pays a portion of assisted living. I paid PA $1365 on April 8 to collect all financial information required by the VA and then to submit the application. I paid an additional $99.95 fee for research. Also to qualify, PA told me I needed doctor certification about the need for assisted living and be established in a facility. I took those steps. PA told me that the benefit would be about $2700 and I would receive the awarded portion going back to when the application was processed. Weeks after the application was filed, PA told me that the VA needed more information--my life insurance--and that was submitted. After several more weeks, I was informed that my life insurance disqualified me from the benefit. I had to move out because it was unaffordable without the benefit. Im sure PA would assert that there is no guarantee. That is understood. However, the organization purports to help veterans whom they determine qualify for the benefit and evaluated my income to see if I did. I was eligible based on the required financials. PA represented that they were knowledgeable about the requirements and how to apply and that was why I paid them. However, the organization failed to collect all of the information that the VA apparently requires (here, the insurance). They should know and assess the information that the VA uses to evaluate applications and then based on that, told me if I were likely to qualify. Instead, they assessed me positivelybased on the wrong (incomplete) information. I paid PA $1464.95 to, as their site states, help me with the application and cut through red tape. Yet PA did not even have the knowledge about which financials would be considered by the VA when they told me I qualified. I am requesting a refund, a fair resolution to a situation where I did not receive the expertise about the application and eligibility I paid for.Business Response

My father has paid them the $1300 and they kept on lying saying they needed more forms and we finally had them all in and they just keep ignoring us. My father has since passed and I think they are scammers that rely on people dying so they can keep the money paid for doing absolutely nothing! This is elder abuse and a scam! Services were rendered on 02/02/2023. Attached you will find the fee agreement that states exactly what the payment was for.
We worked with Dawn for 6 months to get the information that we needed to file the free application for VA benefits. We had 58 contacts with Dawn
about the application. We explained several times that according to the VA rules the client needed to be paying for care. Dawns father was in between care facilities and hospitals.
We did file the application at Dawns request even though we did not have all of the accurate information. The application was turned over to be made on 08/04/2023 (Friday) and was filed on 08/07/2023(Monday)
On 08/04/2023 the following email was sent to Dawn letting her know the VA rules but we will file the application at her request.

to Dawnmarie, bcc:
Hello Dawn
Thank you for taking my call earlier today. This is what we discussed.
The VA does not usually recognize hospitals as a long term care facility. So they will likely argue that, even though he owes a co-pay for care. I also marked down you mentioned the hospital is also a skilled nursing facility or a "swing bed."
The other thing we spoke about was how the VA would award the retro pay if they approved his claim, but he were to pass before they came to that decision. The retro pay (accrued benefits) would be awarded to the family who pays for his final expenses out of their own account. They would only reimburse up to what the max retro pay would have been. If the VA approved retro pay of $10,000 and the family paid his final expenses of $11,000, the VA would still only reimburse them the $10,000.
Please keep all receipts of any of his final expenses to be able to document it with the VA.
Please keep me updated on how the surgery goes and if he is able to make it home.Unfortunately, the client passed over that weekend. When a client passes the VA stops processing the application.
