March 23, 2019 a ***** representative came by my apartment and offered to clean my carpets so they can show off their ***** Avalir 2 vacuum cleaner. She showed us (my daughter ***** and I) how dirty our carpets were and how much cleaner my apartment would be if we were using a *****. The asking price of $2295 was too high, so I declined, however she kept pressing for the sale and offered to give us the full purchase price ($800) of our "under preforming" ***** vacuum as a trade in in lieu a cash down payment. My ***** vacuum was relatively new and working normally. The first time we used the ***** vacuum we had a problem with it. I called the number on the paperwork to explain the problem, the person on the phone assured me it will be fine and told me that I needed to bring it to their location in Salem NH. I told them how disappointing it is to already have a problem with it and would rather they pick it up and return my ***** Vacuum. They told me they couldn't do that, and I needed to bring it to them at their location. We packed everything up and drove to their location in NH. When we finally got there and reiterated how disappointed we were and asked to cancel the purchase contract and return our *****. They told us they couldn't do that; the problem was caused by "operator error" and they would replace the broken belt at no additional charge. This occurred within the first two of days and has been brought back to them five more times for the same reason. Although they kept citing the problem was due "Operator error" I never had these problems with any of the other vacuums I have owned. Due to illness we have only tried using the ***** a half a dozen times; my daughter in-law has been doing the cleaning using her own vacuum and therefore haven't had to use it. We recently tried using it and it caught on fire! Once again, I called the phone number on the contract and was immediately told it was probably another operator error and was told to bring it to them. I am 88 years old, it’s unfair of them to keep making me lug this heavy vacuum all the way to them, only to be accused of causing the problem due to operator error. Although I don’t have any confidence in their ability to ever make it work as described, I continued making the monthly payments until it caught fire last month.

I actually have 4 Kirby vacuums in 2 homes. The first one was purchased in about 1973 and is the old red model. I do like the way they perform when they are in good working order. However, I have had trouble with finding a reliable place in my area to buy parts and to service them. I like to keep one upstairs and one down & one set up for hard floors and one for carpet. They are heavy for me to carry up and down. The oldest one, I use for the basement. It has a bag that you need to empty! I have one now that is not working at all and cannot find a Kirby dealer in my area to take it to to be fixed. I was told that these are guaranteed for a lifetime, however, they occasionally need parts or repairs and there does not seem to be a place near me as the one that was here has closed. They had a very poor reputation for customer service as I see from reviews. Can you please tell me where to take my vacuum to be repaired? I have obviously been a good customer. There is an independent distributor in York, PA whom we know will be delighted to assist, but if Ms. *** prefers, we can take care of her right from our World Headquarters in Cleveland.
