    FTC Takes Action Against Multistate Auto Dealer Napleton for Sneaking Illegal Junk Fees onto Bills and Discriminating Against Black Consumers

    The following describes a government action that has been resolved by either a settlement or decision by a court or administrative agency. If the matter is being appealed, it will be noted below.

    On 4/1/2022, the business entered into a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission and the Illinois Attorney General. The business will pay $10 million to settle the lawsuit alleging that the business' eight dealerships and the general manager of two Illinois dealerships illegally tacked on junk fees for unwanted "add-on" products such as payment insurance and paint protection.     On 11/14/2022, the Federal Trade Commission is sending payments totaling more than $9.8 million to consumers who were harmed by Illinois-based Napleton Automotive Group's junk fees and discriminatory practices. According to the press release, the agency is sending 66,355 checks, averaging $147 each. Recipients should cash checks within 90 days. Consumers who have questions about their refund should call the refund admistrator, Epiq, at 888-691-6050.       Purchased 2014 ****** Outback on Dec 22, 2023. Transmission chain broke and car is inoperable, nor is it cost effective to repair it. This occured March 7, 2024. The car only lasted 11 weeks! We paid $9500 cash (as is). However, the sales manager contacted me! (I inquired about the vehicle and was told someone had put a deposit on it. I then continued to look elsewhere. 3 days later ***********************, the Sales Manager, contacted me and said it was now available. Had he not called me, I would not have purchased this lemon.)Also, it feels like they did not fully disclose all the issues with the car since it only lasted 2 months!! I have also contacted the Attorney General and they will be reaching out to the company too. If neither you nor the ** are successful in resolving, I will file a small claims petition. This is no way to do business!!We want our money back.

      Bait and switch pricing on ****** ******. Told me 10% under. Then when came in with check 10% over. Then told better business bureau they said some dealers charge that but they said deal was msrp. Total lie from what happened that day.
