I invested in this company through a financial advisor. The worse investment I ever made! Penalties for early withdrawal prior to 12 year contract date are exorbitant and their methods of computing roi are confusing and questionable. An example: I moved a $28000.00 **** to Athene in 2011, left it there until I could withdraw without penalty (12 years). In 2023, it was valued at $42000.00, a gain of $14000.00. I withdrew the $42000.00 in 2023, invested it in some blue chip stocks and the account balance today is $69000.00. A $27000.00 gain in one year. I would advise any serious investor to avoid all annuities and, especially, Athene. I would fire any financial advisor that utters the word annuity to me in handling of my investment. This company not only lacks transparency in their investment strategy, that have the most inefficient and pathetic customer service when you are looking for assistance on anything.Athene USA Response

Another one-star review. DON'T DO IT!!! I am the caregiver for my father and here I am trying to leave a review on the ATHENE ANNUITY AND LIFE COMPANY. Am I?!? I don't know - it says ***************, ** - I'm trying to navigate the miles and miles and miles of RABBIT HOLES - what happened to ATHENE ANNUITY AND LIFE COMPANY in *******, VA?!?!?!?!?!?I spent over $50 faxing a POA, Letter of Competency, Current Mailing Address, and Phone Number (MINE!!!). I get a letter dated two weeks after it's computer generated saying they have been trying to call - WHO?!? Not MY telephone number which is what is supposed to be in the system. Then trying to get through to the EAST COAST TIME ZONE which shuts down after "business hours." is ridiculous. I've been up since 6:00 am PST only to go through a rat race of AI screening and only to be told TWICE that their system is down and call back in an hour. So - I called back at 7:55 am and now I have to call back at 9:00 am - guess what I have a new caregiver support group meeting I'd LOVE to (and NEED to!) attend!!!!!The CEO, HEAD HONCOS and SHAREHOLDERS are LAUGHING ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK!My father worked long and hard for his retirement pension and is now in memory care. I don't have the luxury of having a job and contributing to my SSI because who wants to hire someone who can't get to their job because they're always chasing this stuff!!!!! My mom had a very small annuity at this company. Since she past away, it has been impossible to communicate with them. All their mail goes to a ** O box( so you can't even do a certified letter to them .They never called me after filling out the beneficiary claim online. All paperwork has to be mailed to the ** O **** which I think they just dump in the trash. When you call, they can't tell you anything. When my mom was in hospice, she tried to cash it out and that never happened. If your going to get a life insurance policy or an Annuity avoid ******* Trustage has wonderful customer service and it can all be done online. They call back promptly to confirm everything and her beneficiaries recived their money in a week. Shame on you ****** for making a difficult time in my families life more stressful.Athene USA Response

Athene fees have out stripped aby gains and my investments shrinks with every passing day. I've been trying to close my account before they steal anymore. Unfortunately, they have stalled for 6 months. I guess my next calls are to the ************************ and the SEC.Athene USA Response

Definitely would not recommend. In a time period where S&P 500 rose ~30% (Mar 21 to Mar 24), I've made 0.2%. It would be far better to put your money in a savings account with much less hassle.Review from David C

A company I worked for would not allow me to take a lump sum payment in place of my pension. Yet, the company later turned my pension over to these liars. The software used by Athene seems functional at first. The software lists the dates of payments, but it does not say where each payment went. Through the software, I changed my direct deposit bank and received a nice letter stating the change is effective. The software also indicates direct deposits go to the bank I requested. However, months later my direct deposits have not changed. Their messaging software indicates messages will be answered in one business day. The only response I have had took two weeks. The only time they answered a phone call from me was after I was on hold for 2.5 hours! One star is misleading, but I have to select one.Athene USA Response

Worst company to get ahold of; then took forever to return a call. Do not ever purchase annuities from this company. They lose money and have riders you cannot get rid of EVER. In 6 years $110G turned into 90G and there was nothing we could do about it other than fire the financial advisor and get what I believed to be a Return of Capital, but no, 1099-R. Took 10 days to even cash the check. You can call several times and get a different answer. Utterly useless people answering the phones, ask for a supervisor if you can get that far.Review from becky H

Athene sent me documents to fill out and send back to them by Feb 24 2024..and even missing a few things I missed or didn't sign I managed to get all the documents back to them by Nov 2023 for my Annuity pay out and every time I call they tell me it's still processing ..it doesn't take months to process a payout.every thing is done electronically..I think they are trying to scam me so it's time for me to get a lawyer.Review from Caryn W

I cashed out an annuity three weeks ago. I wanted to buy a bitcoin for 41k. They sent the check to the wrong address even though we told them ***************. We asked them to direct deposit in my husbands checking account. They said they would. After not seeing the money posted, I called and they sent the check to the old address. They were very rude wouldnt let us speak to a supervisor. They put a stop payment but now we have to wait. Bit coin is now 52k. This company sucks!Athene USA Response
