South Florida families are preparing this weekend for the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year in the next few weeks. The Florida back to school shopping season kicks off today with a tax free weekend event. The three-day tax holiday allows consumers to buy tax-free clothes that cost $60 or less and shoes up to $60 per pair; it will also cover school supplies costing $15 or less and computers that cost $750 or less.

In addition to the back to school shopping offers, Broward’s Department of Health (DOH) will be offering free immunization for children from 4-18 years old from August 7 to August 22.

This weekend is a great opportunity for parents to take advantage of the deals that will be available. However the Better Business Bureau of Southeast Florida (BBB) wants shoppers to exercise caution when making purchases and offers the following tips:

  • Create a budget- list all the items you have to purchase and how much you are willing to spend
  • Research major purchases- laptops, electronic calculators and dorm appliances are major purchases compare reviews of a few options.
  • Beware of fake coupons- be cautious of any coupon offering a significant discount in exchange for filling out a survey. These phishing surveys have become just another tactic on how to steal information that can be used to steal your identity.
  • Read the refund policy- inquire about the refund and exchange policies before making your purchases. Consider buying a warranty for your electronic purchases and read the terms and conditions on the warranties as well.
  • Keep your receipts- some stores don’t accept returns or exchanges without a receipt save them and keep them handy in case you have to make returns or exchanges.
