Guest Blog: Benefits of Water Softening

November 30, 2016

Water softeners counteract the effects of hard water by removing the calcium and magnesium ions from water. Hard water can damage your pipes and any appliances that use water. It also makes it harder for soaps to dissolve.

Soft water reduces your energy bill by improving the efficiency of your water heater. According to a study done by Battelle Memorial Institute, using a water softener will keep a water heater working efficiently by minimizing the scale forming compounds in water. Investing in a water softener is investing in the lifespan of pipelines and appliances.

For natural gas consumption, the study done by Battelle also concluded that using soft water can result in natural gas savings.

If you’re doing research on water softeners, you may come across false information on the internet. A myth about water softeners is that it adds salt to your water, therefore you shouldn’t drink it. According to the Center for Disease Control, a slice of bread has between 80 to 230 milligrams of sodium. In comparison, an 8-ounce glass of softened water has less than 12.5 milligrams of sodium.
