Modesto Art Business Fails to Deliver Custom Family Portraits

WEST SACRAMENTO, CALIF., – Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning consumers of an ‘F’ rated custom art business, Ella Brook Art Co-op. The business is allegedly based in Modesto, California and has received eleven complaints and two negative reviews in the last two months at BBB. Modesto Art Business Fails to Deliver

The Ella Brook website, ellabrook.com, was created in June of this year, and the identity of its owner is private on the domain registry.

According to the site, they have four artists on staff who paint custom family portraits. Their website states: “Art prints ship in about 3 days, and we ship custom art in about 10 to 14 days from the time we receive your pictures or required information.”

However, according to complainants, once the money and photos for the paintings are sent, the business stops responding; weeks and months later, they still have yet to receive their family portraits. Three of eleven of the complainants say they found the business on Facebook.

Better Business Bureau also has reason to believe that the art advertised on the website does not belong to Ella Brook Art Co-op. Investigators found two additional websites advertising the same pieces of art, one of which is believed to be the legitimate artist, also based out of Modesto, California.

Better Business Bureau contacted the company on September 21, and September 28, 2017 requesting that they respond to their complaints and that they provide us with a list of steps they plan to take to ensure these issues do not continue. As of today's date, Ella Brook Art Co-op has not responded. All complaints remain unanswered.

Tips for making a purchase online:

  • Check bbb.org first. Before buying from an online business, search for the business at bbb.org. Look for any alerts, customer reviews, and complaints for the business. Also do a general web search for the business, and see if they have social media accounts. If they do, see what others are saying.

  • Is the website protected? This is especially important if you are providing any of your personal information, including your name, address, email, or credit card numbers. Be sure the website begins with “https” - the “s” stands for secure.

  • Know how to spot a scam website. There are a few tell-tale signs a scam website including spelling or grammatical errors, dead end links, and distorted images. Click here to learn more about how to identify a fraudulent website.

  • Use a credit card, instead of a debit card. If the incorrect item is delivered, or your order is never delivered at all, you can dispute the charge within 60 days.

  • Report scams when you see them. Alert other consumers by reporting possible scams at bbb.org/scamtracker.
